Default Crazy project need steering rack mod...need help!!!!

Hi guys,

We have an old 91 crx si and we are planning to do something crazy with it but we have a big problem... We need to move/mod/delete/bypass/whatever the steering rack to make a lot of room...

I'm sure you guys are smart enough to think of a solution... That damn steering rack is our only obstacle, the rest is already planned or done.

uh, without know what you want to do, there's no way to make a suggestion. Are you thinking more of the subframe than the steering rack?

i for see a RWD project and needs room for the motor/trans to sit far enouugh back..

Set it up like a bigger truck, paralagram setup i think its called.Or move the entire rack and tie rod ends infront of the spindles, either way its more work than u think.

Agreed.

If the project is some sort of rwd conversion then shifting the rack in front of the motor will probably be your best solution. Probably gonna need to use a different rack also.

What engine tranny combo you gonna use?

You could also switch the knuckles from left to right and have the tie rods fit on the front and the calipers on the rear. You'll also have to fab a new brake line but that should be an issue. The rack and pinion and steering shaft maybe tricky to fab.

not to mention, when you turn right it goes left..

Get your RHD parts from me. Why not just move everything to the rear, there was a mid engine post, it must have been the longest post ever, pics and all.

nice link... it will help for sure!

we were thinking about going mid engine but thought a FR would be safer in case of engine breakage and heat wise....

The easiest Mid engine swap would be a fiero since its pretty much a one piece / cut and weld thing since the engine, suspension, firewall, ect is all on the same "box"....

And if we go the mid-engine route... Where do we put the intercooler???

I would say there are two choices, intercooler is still front mount but will increase turbo lag due to the very long pipes to the rear, or move intercooler to trunk area and make it water cooled or add on a water mister system.

There is a project on HT, its the longest post I have seen for a project, I dont follow those posts with 13,000 posts talking about a game. Dont know, search for mid engine??

AE's dont need to much mod since they're already FR.

Can't we cut the rack so only the left side steers and then ''link'' the 2 spindles in front of the engine??? Like old hotrods......

The Guy doing the s2k swap dont say much about the rack problem.... I cant wait to see what he'll do....

I think that this system goes through a computer, dont know if it goes through the ECU or not on the newer cars, more parts are going to be needed for sure.

A firewall mounted Toyota rack could be reworked, new custom lines and mount points, etc, YES.

i was actually talking about something like what the off road guys use. they use a hydraulic steering box connected directly to the steering wheel which, based on which way you turn it, sends fluid through lines to the steering rack and is then moved. there is no actual steering column involved. just food for thought

I would not run full hydro if you are planning on running this on the street at all. There is too many things that could go wrong and you lose steering. I read alot of 4x4 build/fab forums and it is never advisable to run full hydro on the street. Just do a little research and see if you can use a different rack and put it in the front like others are saying. Oh plus full hydro usually has sluggish steering, not really what you would be looking for in a car you plan on driving fast.

so did you think the rest of this project was all stuff that is advisable to use on a daily driver? the amount of fab hes planning on doing outweighs the stupid steering for sure. lets put things in perspective people

The_unknown is right, it will never, NEVER, be street driven... and I wont drift it neither. It'll be drag raced and i'll need to steer only when staging and when the rear breaks loose....

I spoke to a couple mechanics, the hydro steering box would be the best idea but i'll need to put the motor in before fabbing anything.

I'll keep you updated!!

Thanks again guys!

stick a pinto rack in the front with the spindles flipped. fabricate some sort of mount in the front and lengthen the steering column... probaly need another apex joint or 2 in there as well...

the nuespeed accord/ BTCC car had some serious re-location on that/those cars. maybe you could find some pictures of what was done.

This car ran a H22 flipped (like a k20 motor) with a custom sequential gear box. The motor was positioned so that it was behind the center line of the front axle. It is really trick.

i didn't find anything on google with a quick search but i know there are some sites out there.
