not hitting vtec.. oil problem?

neighbor has a prelude like mine, only an 5spd and he can't get into vtec anymore, he said it will sometimes, jump in vtec, sporadically the rpms will jump up and down?? but it won't stay in vtec... I heard that if the oil is to low in the car, the computer will keep the car from hitting vtec... is this right?

Im not 100 percent sure but the oil presure is what sets off Vtec. If there is low pressure Vtec wont engage.

uhh that does sound like low oil. but some times it could be the VTEC solenoid screen that needs a good cleaning.
