Default Need a new clutch soon on a DA, suggestions?

The original clutch on my DA is now certainly on it's way out, so I'm going to want to replace it before too long.

Power = stock, I don't see doing anything to add serious power. Certainly nothing past bolt-ons/cams.

It's a DD, so I don't want an ultra aggressive clutch. I would like to go with a lighter flywheel, even though it'll make it slightly less friendly... I'm not in much traffic.

What would people suggest, and roughly how much will this end up costing me? I might manage to do it myself, I'm really not sure though. How much do you think I could end up getting someone from here or something to do it for, in SF bay area (labor only of course)... if I'm paying someone else to do it I'd prefer a person to a shop.

Hey, you should probably check by searching first since this question has been asked literally hundreds, maybe thousands of times. Most people, including myself recommend Exedy stage 1 organic clutches. They are a bit heavier duty than the stock clutch, cost less than a factory one, and hold up relatively better to hard driving. I had one on my gsr for 90k+ miles and the just replaced it since I rebuilt the motor and did an ITR tranny. The clutch itself was still in good condition, even the springs on the disk were still in their places with no movement whatsoever. I proceeded to replace it with the exact same thing (new). They are a really nice clutch, have sat in traffic in so cal and northern cal with it and the pedal feel is really close to stock. For a flywheel look at the fidanza ones or I had my oem one machined down by a reputable metal shop in town and it came it awesome! Have had it 3 years now and never a problem. When the motor and tranny were apart the other day I compared the weight of it to an ACT flywheel and mine was almost just as light for a fraction of the cost. I guess it just depends who you know and how creative you get. As for cost of labor, I am not sure, I did the work by myself with the help of a friend for the heavy lifting. Definately do the search though, there are tons and tons of these topics.

Just get an OEM Exedy clutch or a generic clutch and get an Exedy lightweight flywheel. I read that you don't want to go lighter than 10lbs. Together w/shipping it will cost you about $300 on ebay.

Exedy stage 1... it's good for stock up to probably about 200whp. It feels like stock except with a firmer pedal and more feel and control to it, and much better grab. When I first mashed it after breaking in my Exedy stage 1 I was surprised how hard the clutch hit with really fast shifts, it always chirps third gear now and that's with a stock B18b1.

I don't remember reading the OP saying he needed a clutch that will "chirp" in 3rd.

Having grip is nice and all, but I'd prefer being able to get off the line <1k rpm without trouble when I want to, which I can now.

And actually, back when I had some shitty tires on the car I could chirp into 3rd... with Ecsta SPTs in 205/50R15 that went away.

You shouldn't be starting at less than 1k rpms anyway so that you engine doesn't bog and so it gets a good supply of oil... and what I meant by saying that it chirps into 3rd is that it has a nice grab to it and doesn't slip between shifts like the stock clutch - but still maintains drivability and doesn't chatter or anything like that.

labor will depend on the mechanic. normally i see labor in a shop around 250-300 plus your parts. xtd is a cheap ebay clutch it will work and if u on a low budget sure why not. but for longevity i honestly say spend the extra 40-50 bucks over ebay junk and do a exedy oem replacement clutch. its a nice clutch. not to bad on price.

I currently can get moving with no throttle at all, and while I don't expect to be able to do that with a lighter flywheel and more aggressive clutch, I don't want to be slipping the tires instead of the clutch either.

I do too sometimes but only on accident, I aim for 1-1.5k. I can get moving with no throttle with the Exey stage 1, and it's still perfectly normal to drive in traffic and everything, but has a much nicer feel to it with more feedback and of course holds more power and gets power through faster on fast shifts. It drives like stock when you want it and will only make the tires slip if you're trying (shifting fast, or burnout obviously).
