Default Spring sizes?

I do not know much about springs but I see that they come in different sizes such as 6", 7", 8", and so forth. Is there a benefit to having longer or shorter springs? Any helpful input is appreciated.

If all other factors remain the same, a shorter spring (fewer actve coils) will have a higher rate than a longer one.

Typically, shorter and longer springs of the same spring rate will have different wire diameters and/or coil diameters in order to keep the same rate.

Of course the spring length also determines the maximum and minimum ride height you can go with your coilovers.

Additionally, too short of a spring will coil bind before you otherwise run out of suspension travel.
