I bet this is a question not asked very often. (I searched first and didn't find an answer)

I would like to govern my Civic lx 1996 automatic (Canadian) so it can't go faster then 120km/h. Is this possible? I don't want to put a block behind the throttle.

first question, Why?

but the answer is there should be a chip for the computer or take it to the local shop and have them set the rev limiter. you could use an engine management system.

 

before i looked at your profile i figured you were some kids dad wanting to keep him from speeding but now that i see it is your car i recomend that you just lif your foot of the gas at 119km/h.

Christ on a crutch its a honda, not an Aston Martin.
Just do what the rest of the world does and keep attention on how fast your going.

That is... unless this is a preventative measure for someone else using the car.
Thats a different story.

I dont think you can edit OBD2 ecu's, needs to be OBD1, like a chipped p28.

Hmm, I'll call Honda.

My reasoning for this is the car doesn't have cruse and it loves to fly. I work shift work and I don't want to loose focus and find myself in a street racing charge for going 40 over.

Another reason is the Mrs. She has a 06 Cobalt (POS Car Don't Buy) and I have this 96 civic (Sweet car better then hers except the cruse control). This car is going to be used as much as possible so we can keep the miles down on hers and off load it and I don't want her smashing into a deer on the 401 (big highway) going 120+km/h and killing herself and 7 other families in the process.

I guess I'm a boring 22 yr who doesn't want to race.

Then get rid of the LX and replace it with a '96-'00 EX sedan. It will have cruise control.

 

no cruise huh? i have a 96 and an 03, both lx's, and they both have cruise control

Ah, NVM, I read the question wrong.

Answer:
Switch to an OBD-I ECU (use an OBD-IIa to OBD-I conversion harness) and run a chip on it. With any program you can put a speed governor on it.

Chip + harness should be about 200...

Putting a block behind the throttle is ******* stupid. It'll limit your acceleration and not necessarily limit the speed.

The LX here has 106hp, no cruse, and roll up windows by default.

Have the dealership install cruise?

 

If you don't want to install a factory cruise control setup, you can pick up a relatively inexpensive cruise control kit from someplace like JC Whitney, and the installation should be pretty simple.

Yes its an LX.

Dealer said 450++ for after market parts.

I don't have a garage to work in or a sheltered parking lot so doing it myself, I'm not so sure about.

Putting a block behind the throttle is expletiveing stupid. It'll limit your acceleration and not necessarily limit the speed.</TD></TR></TABLE>[b]And if you need the extra acceleration to get on the freeway or avoid a wreck -- good luck removing the block in time.

 

As far as i know it's 120mph.
