Got a question about the CT26 turbo? HELP!!!
Well, I was planning on using a CT26 turbo out of my dad's 89 supra for my turbo kit that i'm putting together. I've been searching but i can't find an answer. I have a buddy that says its that since it was meant for a 6 cylinder car that i would have to get the fins cut or shaved (don't know if he meant on hot or cold side) or something to that extent for it to actually spool up faster for my car. I've got a GSR in my hatch. Question is that is it true that i have to get the fins cut or whatever for it to be more efficient for my build. I'm not trying to build a race car. I just want a little more power and something that is worth showing off. Nothing crazy since its my DD. Should i stick to this turbo or just get a new one like a t3/t4? Also i don't want it to take FOREVER to spool up but not too fast either.
I must agree your friend is a moron. That turbo is also used in celica's and mr2's and they are both 4 cylinders.
i think the ct26 is the worst turbo ever made. i owned a mr2 and had several freinds with them. on the 2 liter mr2 motor the damn thing didnt spool up till 3 grand and power was dead at about 5500.

not sure what mr2 you had bro, i had the 3sgte motor w/ my ct26 clipped and that thing spooled up pretty quick and held boost and pulled hard to redline
later on i sold that and got me a 2.2 non-turbo and used the ct26 turbo setup and that thing was very very fun to drive and had more power than my other one
but anyways to stay on topic i think the ct26 is a good turbo to use on a honda

ever had your mr2 on a dyno? i had an mr2 dyno day and we saw the same results on numerous cars.
its just so much easier to do it right the first time. i'd suggest finding yourself a nice t3 based turbo before you go making a manifold for a turbo you might not be happy with....
on a side note i miss my mr2, that car was a blast to drive. boost controller and exhaust and it went 13.4's all day long. pretty sad everybody on the mr2 boards at the time thought it had an upgraded turbo on it haha. mid engine rwd is fun!

The Supra turbo is a good bit larger than the mr2 uinit but it still only flows 525 cfm.
I agree Toyota should stick to making cars not turbochargers. The upside is the turbo you have is worth real good money if you know where to get rid of it. Those units are no longer available and turbo repair shops have a hard time finding those units in a rebuild able state. If it is in good shape it is worth 150 bucks as a core to most shops.

Ever notice that any turbo toyota came with the ct26? I'm not sure if the newer supras came with two ct26's or not but that would make sence. Hey they even put that tubo on their diesel land cruiser.
From working at the dealership and doing way too many HG's on MK3's and enough T-Belts on a MR2's to make a sane man go crazy. We had spare ct26's at the shop and tried them on a few HMT setups and they were the laggiest POS's ever. CT26 is stump pulling turbo like a desiel not a high reving hp making turbo.
well thanks for the info everyone. but now i've got another question: would you stick to this one or get another?
I am doing a setup for a local guy on a sohc ZC and he brought me this turbo. The CT26's have a pretty big turbine housing, and I had to steer him away from it because it just doesn't seem like a good option versus a small trimmed Garrett he has. I've heard alot of accounts of these falling on their face, and with the turbine housing size, I can't see them spooling too damn quick.
Does anyone have firsthand experience with the CT26 and a sohc motor? I'm not putting together the setup for another couple weeks, so I'm still open to changing my mind on the deal.

I tried one on mid 90's corolla 1.6L and it was a turd, very laggy maybe with the ZC having some more RPM it would be better. The owner switched to a used t3 frame turbo and the car came to life. I wouldnt use a CT on any small displacement engine, spend the extra money and find a used garret
no you won't don't go out and spend too much you could easily sell your turbo and buy a Holset turbo which is the greatest junkyard turbo evar
Then you will never have to feel like you lost out. But on a serious note it sounds like you don't have alot of money to play with buy a decent used holset, they have a T3 flange and plus since you have a gsr you'll have no issues with not enough flow so there you go just my two cents.
