Default '96 Prelude trunk question

I have a 96 Prelude and just wondering what exactly the trunk springs do. If i was to remove them would it make a huge difference. From the looks of it they are just 2 rods that cross and help open and close the trunk. Any help is appreciated.

they hold it open when you open it, so unless you like holding it the whole time, I suggest leaving them in.

The reason i had asked was cause i want to mount different speakers in and the magnet hits them. Any suggestions to get around that?

yup, I bought some nice 6 1/2" speakers for the back of my '96 and the same thing happened to me. I had to go back and get 6 1/2" slim speakers. apparently, this is a common size. I wouldn't remove the trunk springs, but it's your car. If you do, just keep your face away from them when you take them out.

If you do take them out the trunk won't open at all by itself and it won't stay up either...they may be thin bars but they hold up a lot of weight. One option for you (that would take some work) woul be to take out the trunk bars and mount some hood dampers back there to hold the trunk up....otherwise do what everyone said and shim the speakers.

The previous owner apparently ran into this problem and used a piece of particle board and covered it with black carpet and it looks great. Just make sure that you don't shim it too much though or you will find that you cant get your speaker covers on and it will look the ghay.

I saw your post on how you did your trunk with the dampers- https://honda-tech.com/zerothread/2051438 - what size did you use cause that would be perfect for me! Thanx

Don't know anything about the size, but they were hood dampers from eBay for a 96-00 Civic made by Godspeed....$50 shipped
