Default Main Relay or needs Tune up???

Okay this has happened several times. I come out to start the car and it cranks but does not start. I let it sit for a few mins and it starts. It does this on the same senario for a day, bright, sunny, hot. Some people say tune up up, others say main relay... I researched a little and am caught in the middle. Any thoughts???

My bet is on relay. Do you get a CEL that will sometimes turn it's self off after 10-20 seconds when it car doesn't want to start?

if its the main relay, when u turn the key to its first on position (so the stereo etc is on) u wont hear a click after about two seconds. if the main relay is fine u should hear an audible click.

this was how it was on my eg anyway. my mate re-soldered it (the connection on the MR) and it was fine then.

hope that helps

Well seeing as how it always did this when it was hot outside, Im gonna go with it is the main relay. Ive done all minor tune-ups. Changed spark plugs, Spark plug cables, battery, Oil, transmission fluid, coolant, timing checked. The only thing I have left to do is change the distributor cap. Starter is fine. Im gonna have to go all the way to the honda dealer to get the Main Relay. Since summer is just about over, im guessing the main relay wont be a problem again until next summer, so I can replace that on a rainy day. But thanks for all your help.

Yeah it sounds like the main relay, my civic had the same problem, It wouldn't start on hot sunny days because of the stupid faulty sauder issue. U should be able to do a little more diagnosis though, get in ur engine bay and have somone turn the key on and see if u can hear the hiss of the fuel line priming, if not, good chance it's ur main relay.. Best of luck.

Had the same issue... would come out to the car sitting in the sun for hours and it would not start. Haven't had an issue at all with a new main relay.

Im going to say the same thing I have said a few times now. If you have an after market alarm and you do replace your relay and it still has issue, the next thing to check is the wiring for the alarm. With the older wire connections and the heat, this causes poor connections so the ignition or starter kill does not function properly. Anyways it's something to check out if the relay doesnt take care of the problem.

Okay thanks again. Im gonna check the fuel thing again, so lemme get this right. If the key is turned to the ACC postion I should here the fuel priming with in 2 seconds and that is goof, and means its not the fuel. If I dont here it click it means its the fuel system. Also just for refrence i have to go honda dealer for main relay. Can anyone tell me a ball park figure of what they run?

I ordered mine online from Majestic Honda. Paid $56.93 after handling fee. Expect to pay more if you walk into a parts store. The local Honda dealership wanted close to $100 for a main relay.
