98 Honda Civic Tranny Swap Question, Help Please!
I have a 1998 Honda Civic with the CVT tranny. The problem is it is a piece of crap and I hate it and was wondering what it would take to put a different regular auto tranny on there (wiring, etc...) or is it a direct bolt in. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!
c'mon, somebody has to know:
1998 Civic HX with crappy cvt tranny that keeps going out
I want to put a regular auto tranny in there
What would it take?

the only automatic HX's came with the CVT tranny. Yes any 92-00 D series automatic tranny will bolt up to the D16y5 (hx) motor. However, the D16y5 head is a vtec-e head (lean burn mode). The only 2 ECU's (P2N) that are avail for the HX motor are for the manual and the CVT. The auto ecu for the CVT will not know how to jive with a normal automatic tranny. An ecu from an automatic dx/lx/ex will not be able to control the lean burn mode operation of the HX head.
So your options are: replace or repair the tranny, or convert to 5 speed manual.
I bought my 96 CVT HX and it is doing the same thing. I've collected almost everything needed to convert it to manual. I'm going to do the swap in a month or so. I considered replacing the tranny with another CVT, but after reading so many posts about them slipping, it isn't worth the chance.

^^^good answer there.
I'd go manual if I were you, otherwise an option you might consider is putting a regular automatic in there and swapping to a Y8 head then use the P2P auto ecu...

Have you tried changing the CVT fluid i.e. replacing it with ATF-Z1? its the recommended proper CVT fluid. Also try going for CVT overhaul to clean especially the strainers and lower valve body coz it can get quite dirty.
My friend had his done on his JDM EK3 D15B 3 stage with CVT and been running fine since. He used to have the crap shudder and jerkings.
By the way I'm driving a VI-RS with CVT too and till date still works fine. Just remember to change the fluid at every 24000km but I'd opt for 20000km just to be on the safe side.
