Default HT to the rescue!!! Please help. Window Regulator....very confused.

So, my door panel is off, and I am still no further in figuring out why the hell my window regulator won’t work. This is a long story, any help would be greatly appreciated. I am picking up a regulator today. The car is a 2004 ES2 (civic 4dr).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

I was driving and pressed the auto-down on the driver’s side window. It went down most of the way, and then I heard a ‘clunk’. When I tried to roll the window back up again, it wouldn’t move. I could hear the motor running, so I figured the window had fallen off of the track. I was moving the next day to Calgary, and I didn’t have a trim removal kit, so I decided to take it to the Honda dealer and get them to put the window back on its track.

AT THE DEALER:

The tech guy said that a cable snapped or something. And he advised me to get a new regulator assembly. However, Honda Canada charges like $230 for a new one so I said I would wait. He taped the window up and I drove to Calgary. I started calling around town and found a Honda parts wholesaler who is selling my regulator for $100. So……..last night I decided to get out the old Helm’s manual and see for myself exactly what is going on.

LAST NIGHT:

I managed to remove the door panel and all the trim without breaking any clips (yay me!). However, in the manual it says to lower the window enough so that you can gain access to the two bolts attaching the glass to the regulator.

First problem: I can’t seem to lower the window at all. I disconnected the power window harness (maybe that has something to do with it?). So I can’t get to the bolts to remove the glass, so that I can remove the regulator assembly. Everything else is disconnected and ready to pull out, but the glass isn’t. What a pain in the ***.

So then I figure, oh well, I’ll just reach under the body panel and check the regulator by feel. If one of the cables did indeed snap, I would be able to tell by pulling on it.

Second problem: I felt around under the body panel, and pulled on the cables to check if they broke. As far as I can tell, there are three of them. One between the top of the window motor and the regulator rail, one between the bottom of the motor and the rail, and one running vertically along the rail itself. I pulled on all of them and all of them seemed to be connected at either end. So, then I think, the Honda guy was full of ****, and the window did, in fact, just fall of its track…..nope. It is right where it should be. WTF?

I have NO IDEA what is going on, and I need HT’s help really bad.

What are some common things that fail on a regulator assembly? I KNOW the motor is fine. I can hear it.

How do I get the damn window down far enough to remove the glass from the regulator assembly?

Cliffs:
1. Window regulator broke.
2. Honda guy said it was a broken cable.
3. Checked last night and came up with 2 problems;
(a) couldn’t get window down far enough to remove the glass from the regulator
(b) couldn’t find any snapped cables in the assembly by feeling it through the body panel.

HELP!!!!

Thanks in advance

take your time and check all the little metal ends on the cables. all the wheels and see if the cable is off.

Thanks. Now if I can only figure out how to get the glass off the assembly, I should be set.

You'll need to wait longer than an hour to bump a thread. Aim for 5hours or so. Most people aren't on here ALL day.

If I knew enough about Window Regulators, I'd gladly lend a hand, but they're one thing I do not soil my hands of, because they annoy me.

lol, sorry about that. I was just in kind of a hurry to get it resolved b/c I had pick up a regulator used at lunch.

I think I figured it out though, thanks HT
