Default 98 civic LX manual trans- grinds only going into 3rd gear

I shift through 1st and 2nd fine but when I go to shift into 3rd gear it grinds then goes into gear. I have a buddy that works at a honda dealership and he said that the syncronizer might be going out. Do you have any other input on what it might be?

it's the brass synchro wearing out.

I also get a rattling sound at about 3 grand in every gear. Is this the heat shield or something else?

synchros are only sold with a 3rd gear/ plus 3-4 sleeve. It's about 150-175 for the kit from the dealer. You could just say the hell with it and let it grind for a while, the only real problem is when you go to 1-2-4, this puts more strain on the 4th gear synchro and then it will start grinding. Then you'll go to 1-2-5, then 5th will start grinding.

Gears grind first, then you lose the ability to keep it in gear.

I'd double clutch for the time being

accell in 2nd gear, press clutch in, shifter in neutral, let clutch out for split second, press pedal in, move to 3rd gear.

With your ~34% reduction from 98 lx 1.782 2nd gear to 1.172 3rd gear, you have "more time" to complete this task.

You also have the option of replacing it with a y8 3rd gear, but then you'd have to order the y8 countershaft 3rd gear as well.
