whinning transmission only in 1st gear????>>>>>>>>>>>>>.did s
put new bearings in trans. everything was put back according to the manual. all shims measured. only problem now is i get a whinning sound ( same sound as going in reverse fast. just not as loud) while driving in first gear only.... no loss in power , all gears shift into gear perfectly fine, and no grinds in any gear not even reverse and is not heard in anyother gears just first gear.... trans has been torn down about 6 times to figure out what is going on.... no luck on finding what the problem is... i figure it has to do with 1st gear specifically but can't figure it out where, no abnormal wear on 1st gear gears and it matches up fine with the mainshaft? and i dont think its the diff. since it only happens in first gear???
hopefully someone else has had this problem and can help.... thanks

All 3 of my Civics have exhibited this. I just accepted it as normal . . .
The reason Reverse whines is because the teeth on the gear are cut straight; straight gear teeth just make a lot of noise because of the way they contact when they are meshed. That's the reason all of the forward gears have helical (angled) teeth - to keep them relatively quiet.

hey mine does the same crap. Its a h23 tranny. Whining in 1 gear also. And no loss of power. maybe i need to change out my tranny fluid. I'm still using 10w-30 regular oil as a lubricant.

sorry about the lack of info.
stock d15b8 with stock s20 trans. it has enough oil 2 quarts , and i do get very fine shavings when i've drained the oil. ive looked for noticeble wear on the gears and ive found none? all the gear teeth are all there without any wear and all gears line up fine. the differential looks fine also. and first gear itself looks just fine also no wear...

the bearings are all brand new.. its not a bearing problem.
the first gear roller bearing was changed also.. and bearings wont go bad instantly. and the noise was heard instantly after putting the trans together.
whinning sound>> (put the trans back together, put it back in the car, put oil in,etc... put the transmission in first gear , whinning sound)
so it wasnt like i was driving it for miles on end.... so it has to do something with first gear... if it was the bearings you will hear it in the other gears aswell...and its nice and quiet with the clutch pushed in and in neutral.
dont mean to disagree... because you are the guru... its is a first gear specific problem .
anyone else???

its not the bearings... i just took this apart 6 times and the bearings were check with oil in them. spun smooth no lumps at all, then they were sprayed with wd40 to be cleaned of the oil and air pressure dried . all the bearings are fine. <<< i know its common that the input shaft bearing go bad.. but rest assure this is not a bearing problem at all...
i wish it was that easy too : (

I'd like to know the answer as well. I changed out my TO bearing twice, roller/needle/mainshaft bearings as well. Still doin' this crap. But I think I can hear it in 2nd and 3rd slightly, so might be a diff prob from yours...so baffling tho.

well it may be the same just its in more of your gears?? your seems like it could be maybe when you put the bearings on the countershaft,as you torqued the nut down maybe your second and third gears are not lined up with the mainshaft gears???
and im sure you know what bad bearings sound like as opposed to bad gears since you changed out your bearings? bearings have a kinda "pennies in a steel can" noise and the gears have the same sound as that reverse makes. atleast thats been my experience...which tells me it has to do with the gears themselves.... i know there has to be more people with this problem... go ahead and chime in...

were you able to see any wear on your gears? before you put it together? specifically 2nd and 3rd gear?

My boy at Honda did the work(I dont have the tools/space/yadda yadda), but gear wear was fine. But the tranny fluid was a lil shiny(shavings)...we have no idea where this is coming from. Tranny fluid got dirty after only 2 months. I've already spent too much getting parts for this tranny and doin the whole uninstall/reinstall crap, I'm just gonna ride it out for a couple of months and just go with the JDM LSD tranny.
