Default drain flange gasket material alternative?

ended up tweaking my drain flange and screwing up the gasket when trying to remove my drain line. I got another flange I can use but no gasket. is there something I can use for gasket material other than the ones that come with new flanges? what about a piece of rubber from a coupler or will that melt?
