vtec on b16..
i know this may be stupid but i always wondered, how come when you put an exhaust on a car with a b16 you pretty much lose the really hard intake sound, my friend has an Si and with just an intake and the vtec sounded like an itr but the moment he put an exhaust all u can hear is exhaust vtec
I do not know the reason but I think it has to do with the gas exaust velocity. because my friend bolt on a megan racing header on his SI and it souded way quieter.

It's because the VTEC lobes have a lot longer of a lift duration than the standard lobes.
So when it locks the rockers and switches over you hear the difference in valve duration like "omg" - night and day.
EDIT:
Oh, and the reason why when it's with an exhaust it's even more of a changeover is because obviously an aftermarket exhaust is more flowing, which allows more sound to come out. That's why your engine is louder with an exhaust. A smaller, more restrictive exhaust (stock) restricts sound.

A simple, uncomplicated truth.
IMO, the intake sound of our Honda engines is what really sounds good, not the exhaust.
