Default New!! With some Q's!!! mechanicly challanged!!! :( --- did some searching

i just got my first car, 95 sol 5speed its got 113k miles on it

i think i need a new clutch but i'm not sure (i don't really know anyone good with cars)

sometimes when i try to shift gears it doesn't want to go into the gear, like if i'm coasting to a stop light in N and i'm sitting there when i go to put it in first gear its li ke something is blocking it normally only happens with first and second gear or when i'm trying to down shift it does it too

but does that mean i need a new clutch? or what else could be the problem?

also i have a crack in my paint on my bumper, is there a way I could DECENTLY fix it myself? or am i going to have to take it to a shop and get it blasted and repainted?

and i was looking at this how to guide

http://www.teamdelsol.com/tech....html

and was wondering if anyone has any experience with it? i was thinking of like a metalic silver, or if you haven't done it, do you think its a good idea? or will it make my car look ghettofied? i know its My car and i should do what I think is good, but i'm lookin' for an outside opinion here!

anyway, I know I have a few more questions but this is all i can think of off the top of my head

thanks for any help that comes along

Sounds like the clutch could be going up. If you are rolling in nuetral and try to put it in first while your moving, it will be hard to put it in.

Best why to test clutch...

Get within 2rpms of redline in third gear. Mash the gas to the floor. If the rpms rise and you stay the same speed then the clutch is slipping.

Trust me, you can smell a clutch slipping.

You should check clutch fluid first. Then you may want to have a mechanic adjust your clutch release point.

You are not suppose to put your car in first gear while you are moving. That's how you ruin your syncos.

but it defenatly sounds like a clutch problem and nothing with my tranny? if i get a new clutch installed would they check all the fluids and stuff? and do you think it would help with me not being able to shift into some gears? and how much do you guys think a new clutch would cost?

and its not just when i'm rolling to lights, 3/5 times when I try to go from first to second it wont go in - i normally end up shifting into another gear and going back down

EDIT:::: oh and i didn't know that i couldn't put it in first while i was moving? i always cost up to lights and stuff and try to put it into first gear so i'm ready for the light - i always keep the clutch pedal to the floor though i didn't think it was doing any harm if the clutch was to the floor, kinda tought myself how to drive stick so i'm probably driving it all wrong

Tranny would grind...Loud. Most likely clutch/pressure plate.

Yea

OEM replacement ~ $150
Labor to install $500 - $1,000

That sounds like syncros, but you would hear a loud grind

Just wears out first gear. You need to think about it. Your axles are spinning and your axles are attached to your gears. If you don't believe me then go 50mph and try to put the shifter in first gear.

Thanks for the help.

When I'm grabing a new gear, is it better to ease off the clutch or just jump off the pedal and let it fall in?

And anyone have any input on how to fix the cack in my bumper? Or on painting my vent covers?

You want to let off the clutch fast, but don't just side step it.

To paint the vent covers right (God I hope they are faded and you are painting them original color) you should take them out of the car.

If you don't want to do that, then tape them off, and get a big box fan to take the paint fumes out of your car.

You must use fiberglass to repair bumper b/c they flex all the time. Putty will just fall off

Thanks, and I was going to paint the covers a metallic silver, and yes I was going to take them out.

But you think that would look lame?

and for my bumper just recomend taking it and getting it blasted and repainted?

There is no reason to paint the interior of your car. Complete RICE. Gains nothing to your car, not even appearance.

For your bumper, you will need to post pics. I'm not sure what kinda crack you have. Just paint?

If it's just paint then take it to a professional body shop. They may be able to fix it for cheap w/o taking your bumper off.

yes i think it would look lame

and as for the bumper it depends how big it is...and its also a personal thing...if it really bugs you, just get it professionally repainted

i all honesty dude, if i were you i would focus on making the car clean and in perfect original running and looking condition before starting to modify little or big things here and there...It's MUCH EASIER to start off a project car that is clean and mint all around then to jump into things now and realize that you dont like what you did before and have to spend more money to change it...

I would also recomend making a "game plan" for your car if you want to modify it in the future while you make you car clean and OEM for now...save and plan out what you wanna do...that way you will do everything right the first time because trust me, its much less expensive to do things right the first time!

and even if you dont wanna modify the car, if you clean up your car now and repair it, you can have a clean reliable car to drive around in and get more money for a mint OEM car when you decide to sell it

thats my two cents

I think the best thing to do would be to buy an automatic. It is fairly obvious that the intricacies of driving like a man are above and beyond what you can handle.

That's variable.

If you know how to downshift into 1st it won't ruin the syncros.

Usually the only time I downshift into 1st while still moving is when I'm entering a steep driveway or something of the sort and am still rolling slowly (like 3mph). Though if you don't know what you're doing, yeah, you can dick ur 1st gear syncros that way.

I wouldn't recommend downshifting into 1st like you would 4th, 3rd, or 2nd.
