Default need help bad

working on an h23 mechanic says there was engine sludge. Dropped oil pan looked okay, checked timing belt, checked timing. has spark and fuel no ignition. Crank moves freely. Figured a bad ring put oil pan back on go to start. Now i get a glug glug noise from oil pan and i put the compression tester on(to see if i have a bad ring) and get nothing needle doesnt move. The comp tester works put it on my car when it was reading 0 and it read fine. does anyone have an idea on where i can start. The starter works turns flywheel the crank turns but no ignition. im out of ideas on where to start now and why the comp test is reading 0.

Check the plugs, wires, and distributor. Make sure nothing is wrong there.

is the reading 0 on one cylinder or all of them? and yes, even if one has no compression, it should run, poorly, but it will usually run.
