I am having difficulty finding the bearing I need to use for my connecting rods. I am using OEM bearings and have tried to use the chart and equation supplied by earl to try to figure it out but maybe I am doing something worng.

my Pauter rods big end diameter measures 1.8900"
and my crank rod diameter or bore whatever measures 1.7713"

I subtract the 2 measurements and then subtract the bearing measurement like say the green witch is 0.0591”- 0.0590” witch I use the .0590 times 2 and I come up with like .0007. I've even used other sizes on the chart for comparison and none are to witch the .015 that I am supposed to be measuring for. I feel like I am doing something wrong I know but what is it? can anyone help me, thanks Tony

 

1.7713-1.8900-{bearing thickness x 2}= clearance. thats off the top of my head so im not positive. also are you using accurate tools to measure. always double check with plasticgauge

 

Red 1.492-1.489 mm 0.0587”- 0.0586”

 

Guys, I'm such a tool. I was using the standard measurements to try to get the clearances that I was looking for.... I don't know what I was thinking. I am still learning but I was able to get the right measurements. I just converted the 1.7713" to metric and that was like 44.9910mm and, the pauter rods from 1.89" to 48mm. using earls bearing equation, I found what bearings I needed. I need 2 yellow and 2 green

0.015=48-44.9910-(2x.0510) or something like that.

Is this correct? if so, that's the way I came up with my bearing clearances. on the 2 that are using yellow, the measurement is within .013-.019. is that fine to use? other ones seem to be out of range. the green were.0146-.020. thanks for all your help. Tony

 

your confusing me . Are you still using metric or standard? Are you looking for .0015(standard) clearance?

1.89=48.0061mm. 1.7713=44.9911mm.

1.89-.0015=1.8885
1.8885-1.7713=.1172
.1172/2=.0586
.0586=RED

WOW, I thought I had it down but I don't see how I need a red? I converted everything that was standard to metric, and the clearance I thought I was measuring for is 0.015 metric?

these are the measurements again:

my rods are 1.89"= 48mm
my crank journal #1 and #4 are 1.7713"= 44.991mm
crank journals #2 and #3 are 1.771"= 44.9834mm

I converted that to millimeters and the did the whole equation the way it says on laskeyracing.com. I don't know. i am way too tired to try to figure it out tonight, I just got off work 3 in the morning. please help me....... I thought I had it....

 

I see where I messed up again. well back to the drawing board again. I will try harder this time and get back to you guys about it.

 

You do realize that .015(metric) is .0006(standard)? Thats a little more than a third of what your clearance should be. It should be .0015(standard) or
.0381(metric). Personally i would quit trying to convert to metric. All the info you need is in standard and im assuming the equipment your measuring with reads in standard, so why convert it to metric?

And your answer to 1.890 rod and 1.7713 journal is still RED.

 

your right... I don't know what I was thinking. I talked with laskey racing over the phone and it sounded like he said .015. it was said over the phone like this" One and a half thousandths. that's why I thought the of that clearance, sorry if I sound liek a douche but I figured it out once I got the right numbers plugged in. thanks for all the help. what tool are you using for measuring?

 

The crank was measured at a machine shop with a micrometer, and the New Pauter rods came with the tech sheet saying they were 1.89". I also called them and that's what they bore the LS rods to. red bearings are really thin, I am glad that I didn't get ACL's. those would have been too tight.

 

i would still take the rods and have them measured and then double check with plastigauge when you put it together.

 

I plan on checking them with Plastigauge when there in along with the mains. I have been shopping online for OEM bearings and what is the difference between taiho and Daido? they carry 2 different part numbers for the same bearings, like Red will have a Daido in () and a different part number than the Taiho in (). look at http://www.hondapartsdeals.com . I think I can use B20 Bearings from the CR-V to use on the B18A, correct?

 

Does this take into account bearing crush?

You cant just take the bore diameter minus bearing thickness and find out what the clearance would be.

When everything is torqued it distorts the main bores and bearings.

thats why you measure them when they are torqued and then check with plastigauge

I just needed a ball park figure to start off with. I know that they might not be what I need but if there not there close. but I needed somewhere to start off you know. didn't want to just get a set of ACL's when what I need is alot smaller you know.

I found the difference between Daido and Taiho... there the 2 manufactures who produce the bearings.

 

You can allways have the machine shop open up the big end of the rod to any size you want, for any bearing you want. 1.8901,02,03,04 etc.

 

I just needed to update this.... the red bearings fell into place perfect and I plastigauged them to make sure. across all 4 rods the clearance was .0015 measuring with plasigauge. so everything worked out perfect. thanks to all, tony
