Default b16A Vs. b18B in a 93 LS integra

ok so this is not one of those V-Tec or no V-tec threads or anything. I just got myself a nice DA and I love it ($2100 with 198K and pretty clean body). But i noticed it was idling quite rough so I did a compression test and I got:

160
155
50
160

or something like that. Odd thing is that it drives perfect other than a rough idle but whatever. Since I generally don't mess with internal engine stuff my first response is ENGINE SWAP. And since the engine in the car also has 198K on it in addition to one cylinder at 50PSi I kind of am leaning towards the swap.

So after we do the compression test I look around on the internet and I find out it could be a bad exhaust valve or something. something simple which could be fixed if I remove the head and take it to a machine shop. Sooner or later (probably saaturday) I will find this out. But right now I am thinking piston rings mostly because I want to do an engine swap and secondly the car is burning oil.

anywho I have a 1994 civic si all beat up body but with a B16A that I bought from hmotorsonline 10,000 miles ago. My friend keeps saying that the b16A will suck in a DA since it is 500lb's heavier than my 94 Si. The situation is further compounded by the fact that I have an integra XSi Transmission in my Integra and I don't think I like the low RPM limiter on the B18 ECU with a tranny with such short gears.

So here are my options and I am wondering which one is the best from a technical standpoint and moneywise is a little important too haha.

I can put my b16a Sir II from my civic into my integ which I think should work nicely with the integra Xsi Tranny. and then sell my S4C tranny and my beat up civic shell.

I can buy a b18B and put it in my integra and sell my civic with the B16a in it (and a b16 tranny),

or I can take the b16 out of the Si and put it in the Integra AND buy a b18B and put it in the civic and sell the civic as a running car with a b16 tranny and a b18B.

I am just really curious as to how the b16A will work out in the integra seeing as a JDM b16A SIR II has very similar specs to a B17A1. Really sorry for the long winded post but it is a complicated situation haha.

My new (to me) 93 integra

My 94 civic Si

id do option 2 put the b18 in your teg. and sell the civic as is. my friend has a b16 in his da with i/h/e and my dc with b18 in it stock is much faster. idk if you consider this compairing apples to oranges your specific situation but thats my two cents. good luck with what ever you decide to do

what transmission does your friend have in his DA? and does this mean that a stock DC LS is faster than a 92-93 GS-R? since the b17A1 and b16A SIR II have VERY similar specs.

Could be some bad Piston rings. Did you drop some oil into the cylinder with the lowest compression then do a compression test on that cylinder?

Yeah I am going to dry dropping some oil in there probly on saturday. I'm in Los Angeles so I don't really want to work on my car out here lol. But I really think that even if it is a bad valve or something I may just put my b16 into the integra just because I have the integra Xsi Tranny in there already and also because I put all new seals and stuff in there 10,000 miles ago. compared to a 198K engine that I have no clue what was done to it.

Also could someone tell me about the consequences of running a b18 with an Xsi tranny? because when I am on the freeway going 60 the RPM's are way high because of the shorter gears. but it is my opinion that the b18 that has a much lower redline than a b16 wasn't made to be constantly at those high RPM's. is my opinion wrong?

iwouldnt mind a b16 in a integra seeing as a DC/DA is only about 100lbs heavier than a EK... and Eks come stock with b16s.

well I dunno I am really wondering things like how a b18B would work with a b16 (integra Xsi) tranny and how the XSi tranny on a b18B will affect gas mileage and what not. as it is now I don't really like being at 4K when I am going 65 because the LS engine was designed to be at like 3K at 65.

I also find it hard to believe that a stock LS is faster than an integra Xsi or GSR since the SIRII (my motor) is 170HP and 116ft/lb and GSR (db2) is 160hp 117ft/lb. There is something wrong with that guys setup if a stock LS beats him or maybe he has an LS tranny and the longer gears mess him up.

This is an old debate, but I just came from a 90GS with a 2nd gen b16, and now have a 99LS with the stock b18b. The 99 has 50,000miles on it and the 90 was fresh as well. Id say the 90 was faster by a noticable amount. My LS is fairly light too, but people beat up on b16s in the DA's and I think its an underrated combo. Its fast enough! The DA gsr had 160hp and was a touch quicker than a DC GSR. The second gen b16 has 10 more horsepower, and you can mate it to a shorter transmission. It only makes sense thats its a fairly fast car.

^^^^ I'm with him. Can't go wrong with the B20 and XSi trans. I'm getting a GSR LSD trans for mine.

well yes a b20 and a b18 are pretty much the same engine (specs wise). just a few ft/lbs torque difference. here are two questions.

if I pair up a non v-tec engine with a b16 tranny what will gas mileage be like with normal driving no crazy high revving. and will it be more expensive than putting premium in my b16. cuz with a b18 I'll throw 87 gas in there and not even care.

I'd say swap in your b16. You already know how the engine runs so there will be no surprises there. If you swap in an engine you know nothing about other then what you are told, you never know how it is going to run until after you go through all the work of putting it in your car.

Besides, isn't the da approx. the same weight as the 99-00 si's which come stock with the b16? So you can expect the same performance as those civics.

just to let all you know what i decided. The B16 will be going in this weekend haha. just because I think it is a cheaper option. I will be listing an S4C tranny in the marketplace in a week or so haha. and a civic shell for like 200 bucks probly.

A lot of people hate on the b16 in DA's. I have a b16a in my DA and it is better/more fun than the b18a I had.

well the vtec wasn't the reason for my decision. I just think that the b18 should be paired with what it was made for. I dunno, I just think that the b18A wasn't made to be revving so high all the time, and the b16 will handle the Xsi tranny better than a b18 would.

Maybe I am wrong but my b16 also doesn't burn oil haha.

I have friends who have owned both a b16a DA and a b20z DA. The b20 had crazy torque but the b16a DA was fast aswell. But anyway, the b16a DA will respond better to modification than the ls, but if your looking to have a bit of a project and boost in the future, then def the b18b and sell the b16a civic!
