Default Oil cooler

I got a new radiator, and it is the one for the auto with the tranny cooler. Can I use it for an oil cooler, and how?

youd just have to run your lines to and from it.

$100 shipped from ebay brand new w/ lifetime warentee. If you get the 26" core it comes with the trans cooler, I think it is easier when they only have to stock one kind of radiator. Where do I run the line from?

To answer your question, the fastest and easiest way to run lines for an oil cooler is to get a sandwich adapter plate between the oil filter and the block. You will need the adapter, enough hose to reach from the adapter to the cooler and back, and hose fittings. I suggest SS braded hose and Earl's fittings for anything on the oil system. Be extra careful how you route them, too, so that they can't slip into moving parts.

The other way to connect it (I did this in the race car) is to get a block adapter that just has hose in/out on it and run it to a remote oil filter location. The advantage is that you can run a larger oil filter, you can connect gauge senders easily, and you can run an oil cooler in the line too. The down side is that it is a little more expensive.

Now answer a question for me. Exactly what radiator did you buy off of ebay that came with an integrated transmission cooler? I need to replace my radiator, and this would save me the immediate need to buy the oil cooler. Can you give me a link to an auction (even an ended auction) so that I know what to look for? Thanks!

No, it doesn't have enough flow capacity

well there is a problem with your idea, one there isn't enough surface area from the automatic tranny oil cooler to cool the actual engine oil. It's also counter active if you think about it. If you are cooling off a possible 600degree engine oil while trying to keep your coolant cooled off, you will be essentially be heating up the water because of the heat transfer. you may see a little reduction but the purpose of the radiator is to cool the coolant/water by displacing it along the radiator fins which the oil will never see. if you put the hot oil under it, you will just heat the coolant up. It's not a great idea, even on some stock cars with the AT fluid circulating through, I doubt the AT fluid will see nearly as much engine temperatures though.

HOLY COW...600 degree engine oil......what kind of engne you got? A rocket engine?

Back on topic....just buy an oil cooler if you need it....you will never get enough flow from the tranny cooler to keep your engine lubed

Check out my sig for pics of my Rs oil cooler

Ciao
