A few swaybar questions/ideas
I have a 88 Si rear swaybar that I'm trying to get bolted up onto my 90 sedan (no hole in the RLCA's for swaybar, and no swaybar mounts) First, would it be safe enough to just simply drill the hole thru the RLCA in the correct spot, make custom mounts which go down a bit lower (since the hole would be lower) ? or is this too risky for the RLCA's?
Also, with the mount, does the mount have to be THAT strong? It seems to me like there is going to be minimal stress on the mount itself, am I wrong?
And one more thing - I was thinking of an idea, now its probably stupid but who knows, why not weld on extra metal in clever ways to make the stock Si bar more like a thicker/stiffer bar? heres a simple drawing of a basic idea of it -

I pointed out the 2 points where its going to be flexing the most, wouldn't this new bar (the red one) cause it to potentially flex MUCH less?

Someone is going to post..."just buy a ST bar"....which is the best thing.
BUT
if you don't want to change the lca ....use plate clamps....do you know what those are?
Basically 2 plates one on each side of the lca and you connect the plates with 4 bolts 2 on the bottom and 2 on the top then connect the endlink to the plate.
You don't have holes in the body for the mounts? Or the nuts aren't welded in the holes?
Also I think if you want to make it stiffer I believe weld on the part where the red arrow is that's where it twists

That clamp idea sounds like a good way to go - in the picture below is this the basic idea you were thinking?

Thanks for your help
And yeah lol that original picture did kinda look like panties lolol.

basically.... thats the easiest way to do it if you don't want to change LCA these aren't my pics but ya this is how it is done lol. Usually because don't want to spend time cutting out the arm as it is seized up or something.....if you want to actually put some effort into it....make a bracket off the shock bolt like the suspension techinque bar
before you make any brackets though....put the bar on and see where the endlinks rest on the lca

Oh ya if you do that....don't drive through an automated carwash that has those tracks that pull you along...you'll get stuck on the rail lol

I thought on EF's the swaybar mounting area was in the red circled area i drew -

Is that an ST swaybar you have? i thought only the later gen civics had rear swaybars mounted in that location.

That is a type r bar on a 89.There are plates on the gas tank side too and so the crossmemebr is sandwiched between the plates(yes with long bolts) You're right the stock ef bars mout up by the tow hook....but if you are going to make stuff might as well make everything huh lol.
I looked at your other topic....I think you misunderstand the ST bar comes with everything you need......it comes with these little L brackets that connect to the shock mount bolt and the endlink connects to that. They made it so it can fit on all ef's even the cars without the si lca.
but if you want ideas on the brackets ....check out this topic...has nice pics

Today when i was looking under my car i noticed there is absolutely nothing that is preparing the car to have swaybar mouts bolted up to it, so my new problem is.. how am I supposed to get the mount on there?? theres no way to attach a nut to above it, and i dont know of any screw that is strong enough to go into there and hold it.. so I have no idea what to do now.
Hi ya if you do it this way..... you have to open a hole up on top so you can use a nut on the bolt. Use a holesaw or something. Do you know what I mean? So you access it from inside the trunk area.
well crap, i wish i didnt have to drill anything
but oh well its ok. so once i have this hole drilled in the trunk i slide a very long bolt thru the the trunk and then thru the chassis reaching all the way down to where the swaybar mount will be? Also i was looking underneath the car, and i noticed there are 2 small sort of dents almost where it looks like there should be holes, but arn't how many bolts hold on the factory swaybar mount?
essex - you are probably the most helpful person i've talked to on HT, finally someone that does not try to push you to just buy the expensive thing.

So you are saying there are no holes at all?? There should be the 2 little holes near the tow hook.
this is how ef hatch is....no you don't need long bolts....just the stock bolts....because you makes the hole big enough that you can drop the bolts down and use a rachet and socket on it. We're not talking huge to do that. Don't forget to use some big washers on the bolts to give the sheet metal suppot..
understand this?
Ya I know you don't want to cut....but if you don;'t want to spend money....this is the way you gotta go lol.....but even having a stock swaybar is better than no bar at all....so good for you for wanting it
I was going to say make some brackets like the ST brackets they bolt to the tow hook brackets.....don't have to cut anything.....but thats up to you...and that more work....maybe you can buy just the brackets ??

Yeah i was thinking of slotting a peice of bent metal under the tow-hook, that may be a little easier, who knows though. Thanks a lot for your help, I guess now its all about luck and ill see how things go.
Thats all that mount is....a big L with 2 supports welded....I saw you asking about welding to the bar to make it stiffer so I assume you can weld or access someone who can.
