Default Wrong &%^%*$@ piston "edit" Got another one

Well i took my GSR block in to be done, bought JE 9:1 pistons, Scat rods, ARP main studs, etc to the machine shop. Had them clearance everything to go a bit looser on all the bearings and pistons for heat expansion, and had everything ready to go to pick it up after work today to put it back in tonight......then i get a phonecall..

Yeah, the pistons i ordered were 81.50mm and three of them were right, however one of them was a stock bore 81.00mm piston. They had checked the pistons but never took the fourth one out of the box as the first three were perfectly identical in size, so they bored the block to match. So at that point i'm screwed, i live in eastern canada, this is a long weekend, and we called the supplier that sold us the pistons and they didn't have any more in stock. Luckily we sourced another set of 4 through Summit, but will be tuesday or wednesday before i get them.

Worst thing is there is a big sportcompact race up here next weekend and thats why i put some parts in the motor for more boost, but when you're in a rush, something always ***** up.

Anyway, sorry for the rant, but i feel somewhat stuck in the middle, JE should have some sort of QC for that stuff, and the machine shop should have checked all the pistons first, but even at that, it was only yesterday when i got the pistons so that didn't leave a lot of time anyway.

Not your fault at all.. the machine shop is responsible.

I beleive the supplier is at fault. They are the ones that packaged up the wrong product and sold it that way.

If he supplied all the parts to the machine shop then unfortunately its up to him to get it straightened out. Now if the machine shop had been the one ordering all the parts then they would definately be responsible and then they'd have to get on their suppliers a$$ to get it corrected.

Unfortunately I know thats happened to aolt of us. I personally bought a replacement 98 civic hood not to long aagon and when it was time to install it was a 98+ Accord hood but the box was labeled 96-98 civic! Nedless to say it causes a couple of problems being I no longer had the receipt.

One thing I've learned working retail (special order person) is ALWAYS check **** as soon as you get it. Its actually funny when you have someone in front of you, waving a 9 month old copy of their special order form, and complaining that they *just now* opened it up and their black toilet turned out to be yellow.

I say both the supplier and the machine shop (to a lesser extent) are both responsible.

That sucks big time Ben. If you do get the new pistons next week, I know you'll still be ready for the weekend. You are cutting it a little close though.

well after shipping out a set of four pistons from summit, one of our local shops called JE and got one single piston sent out, so now i have five coming, three in the motor and one thats the wrong size.....lol

I'm just hoping we have time to get it together and tuned, shouldn't be too much different, i was running the 3mm cometic gasket with the factory JDM slugs, so the 9:1 pistons should be pretty close, but i still am going to retune and tune on C16 for the higher boost. All in all i'm pretty happy with the motor, ran nitrous last year and over 400 whp since March this year on stock internals and everything was perfect inside the motor.

I've been running 19psi all year, can't wait to raise it up

glad to hear that the company is fixing their mistake. Sometimes all it takes is a phone call with a good attitude to the right person.

I remember when I built my block I had my pistons specially made by wiseco. well it it came time to assemble one of the circlips that hold in the pin was missing. I called up wiseco explained my problems and time constraints and the overnigted another set of clips for me.

I'm glad you got your piston in time. It should be a monster at the track this weekend. I think it's time for a new Maritime 1/4 mile record.

When do you think you'll have it on the dyno?

Well i finally got a piston, installed all parts and got the block back. I spent the evening putting the car back together and just got back from a drive. I didn't push it much, just enough to know the motor is completely different.

The motor sounds a lot different now, sounds more like a bike motor, revs quick and has a completely different tone to it. I had a cometic 3mm gasket before, i had set the cam gears to 5 degrees retard for my zero mark as the deck height was higher, then we tuned from there. Tonight i just added the extra 5 degrees to my cam gears as i am running a stock gasket now, the car is dead till vtec then ***** right off, so i know that will have to be tuned again.

Just glad to be running again so i don't have to carpool with my wife. Off to the dyno tomorrow for tuning, then high boost tuning on C16 for the weekend. I would like to have 500 whp on the C16, previous on the stock motor i was making 414 @ 19psi. I figure i'll have to go up to 25 psi to make 500, im running an XS Eng T3/T04S, and im not quite sure where the turbo is going to peak out. Hopefully i can stay within its efficiency to reach my hp goal.
