i cant decide if i want a si tranny or a gsr one really dont know the difference if any body could help its going to be mated on a b18a1 engine
well it matters what u want to use it for. b16 or si trannys have short grears but so does the gsr. si trannys has the shorts grears so if u are using it for drag racing i would use a b16. just my 2 cents

Oh yeah? Why is that?
Just because you have boost, doesn't mean you're car's going to be going past 154mph (the redline of 5th in the B16 trans).
(tool logic 101)
@ OP:
Either one is fine, don't listen to pple talk about gas mileage unless u do a ****-ton of highway driving. As long as you're not doing 100mi one way each day to work your gas mileage won't get owned, OFF the highway the B16 really owns because you have plenty of power transferred quickly making it so you're not FORCED to nail it to move (meaning you end up using less throttle, less fuel), and of course your car is not only a ****-ton faster but it's snappy if you wanna race w/ somebody.
Comes back to one thing though, which is better:
15% throttle @ 5000 RPM
or
75% throttle @ 2500 RPM
Well I'm sure 30 pple are whipping out calculators right now but that part's irrelevant. The point being is what's better, less throttle or less RPM? Neither - half and half - a mixture between the two...say for this example:
30% throttle @ 3300 RPM
Though you'll never achieve it, I'd have to say a good 7 times out of 10 a shorter trans will net you better gas mileage (off the highway) as car's power is more easily utilized. Though going 80mph on the highway in 5th the B16 trans is at 4300 RPM (which isn't all that bad, actually, for a sub 2.0L motor), so you'll notice a slight drop in mpg on LONG highway trips, other than that, the B16 holds all the pros, and none of the cons.
I have no idea what that logic is floating around H-T "if you're gonna boost, go with a GSR, not a B16" - are you that bad at driving that you can't LEARN to launch and not overspin w/ a B16 on boost? Or do you seriously have a problem with 154mph being your top end??

thats true. i had a turbo ls with a b16 tranny it was great. and i also had a fully built b20vtec motor with a b16 tranny its a really good tranny i think

id say gsr tranny, unless u want to be around 4k in 5th gear on the freeway lol
in my expieriance, or everyday drivers, gsr is more convienant, and still has short gears for racing

GSR has somewhat longer gears than the b16 trans. and transmissions w/ longer gears are normally a better match for a boosted car. But for N/A I would definately take the b16 trans over it.

on a gsr tranny being at around 80mph you will be at 4k rpm. and just because youre cruising at a higer rpm doesnt mean youre going to burn more gas so i dont see why that would be a problem.
i do understand people who are making big numbers not using a b16 tranny but for people who arent there than it will do fine.

go with the gsr. with the b16 you will be riding at 4400rpm going 80mph and you only have like 3000rpm left to redline. plus you rcar will only top out at 120mph
Well, my vote is B16 with either a GSR or LS 5th gear. That way, you can have the best of both worlds. Kick butt 1-4th gears and a nice cruising 5th. Typically, at 70 mph, a B16 in 5th is at about 4000 rpm, a GSR is at 3500, and an LS is at 3000. I would not worry about the RPM drop from 4th to 5th as most people don't race in 5th anyway.

See for me as a preference I would be more comfortable driving with a GSR tranny. I just picked up and B18B1 with a B16 tranny and I am going to sell it to buy a GSR. That's just my preference though
b16 are better for all-motor set-up's because of the short-gear'd..but get in mind they are also very weak..they start to grinds easily..
I have a stock block LST now, I think when its built, I'm going to keep it with the ls transmission. Why? Becuase I have enough power to pull my car through the gear, its easier to drive. Even now, with the stock block and LS, I'm about as fast as a C5 Z06 Corvette. Plus, with much more torque, 3rd and 4th gear will be useless with a shorter geared transmission on the street, as it is I don't have traction untill 60 with Falken Azenis tires.
My point is, its almost usless to ask this type of question on H-T. Its a opinion, and the only one that can make your mind up about your car is going to be you. With the 300 WHP I have now I might consider a GSR tranny, no way on the B16, Especially if its your daily.

Because they're tools.
It's the same useless concept that if you boost or swap you 'NEED' bigger brakes - No you don't, just because your HP doubled, doesn't mean your speed should be doubling.

No, with a B16 trans (and stock gears) he'll top out at 154.
Do you really need to go 154 mph?
Being at 4400 RPM is fine.
There's a paradox:
More gas @ lower RPM
-----or-----
Less gas @ higher RPM
I go for #2, but the best is an equilibrium between the two. The GSR trans isn't bad - I just like the B16 trans because it's shorter. B16 w/ an LS 5th really helps if you don't race at the track (you're gonna lose top end).

yeah my friend works a groundzeromotorsports here in Portland. and he built hes gsr motor with boost and using a b16 tranny with lsd. and he runs 10s all day. so i would use the b16 but thats just me.
