Wanted to make this a poll, but I guess as a trial user I don't have that ability yet


Ok, here's what I've got to choose from:

- 98 Prelude Base for $6000 (good condition, 127k, stock)

- 95 del Sol Si $3000 (good condition, 117k, stock)

Now, I'm wanting, first and foremost, a GREAT DD. I do plan to modify either one in the areas of engine, suspension and cosmetics (tasteful, I assure you). If I was to purchase the Prelude I would keep the stock engine and go completely N/A with bolt on mods. If I was to get the Sol I'd plan to eventually perform an H2D or similar swap and keep it N/A as well. I'm having the most difficult time choosing between these two options.

I like the Sol for the fact it has a targa top and roadster styling, though I've had one before, but gave up on it as it was a '94 and had crap seals around the roof and needed significant conditioning. Now, the '95's have the better seals and this one will not require any major conditioning. Also, due to it being nearly 600lbs lighter than the prelude, I'm ASSuming the H22 would feel much more lively in the Sol. Research has yielded the del Sol chassis as having a lot of flex and not the best for road courses, but this could be all chalked up to opinion as well since some say good sway bars and a few other mods and the thing would be rock solid. Still, as a DD, I would want something solid in the curves.

The Prelude is just sexy; no doubt about it. The lines are aggressive yet sophisticated. I've test driven one recently with a three passenger load on the highway and it handled flawlessly and felt powerful as opposed to the STOCK Sol Si. Of course I wouldn't have to worry with a swap as it would already come with a bad *** engine. My only real concerns with the prelude are that the gains from going N/A won't be as obvious as an H22 swap into the Sol. Also, the heavier chassis and modest gas mileage. As a DD the, 22/26 EPA ratings are not exactly persuading (I currently drive a Pilot rated at 17/22).

I'm sure I'll end up elaborating further as this discussion gets underway and everyone chimes in with their expertise, opinions and such. Basically I want a great DD that's be a kick in the pants to drive in way of handling, acceleration and still get decent mileage in these times of ever fluctuating gas prices. Again, apologies for no poll

 

I'd pick the Prelude. More room inside the car, better handling, engine, looks, etc....

No sir, that was the PRELUDE that was teh s3x

I posted in both forums to gather opinions from both (that includes any regrets). We'll see where I get pulled, but so far things are tilting in favor of the Prelude.

How is this even a question? Do you want to see yourself in a Del Slug? Look at it lol. Get the nicest looking and most comfortable DD to you.

 

IMO the del sol is more of a girl car...no offense to those who drive them......there is no way I could make myself buy a del sol, esp if a prelude is the alternative

Ok ok guys, Prelude it is...

I see you've made the choice to see much more of me. Pretty soon you'll wish you'd of passed me over to the civic/sol forum Thanks for all the input! Will be sure to post up pics of the 'lude (doesn't that sound dirty???) when acquired.

 

i say lude but i seen some nice del sols with mugen kits they look hot but get lude man

 

Man, just when I had my heart set on the 'lude, the guy sellin' won't let it go for 5k. So, I ask you... the experts... is it worth more than that? The windshield is pitted in spots, the rims have been curbed, the rear deck where the speakers are may need work/replacement, will need new paint and (the real kicker) after the test drive the engine began to emit a small amount of black smoke from the area of the head and smelled of rubber (what could that be???). He wants 6,750 and edmunds TMV says around 4,500. The dude is goin' by KBB which says around 7,200 so he thinks he's givin' me a good deal already with the 6,750. As you can see there's quite a big discrepancy between what KBB says and what edmunds says. I'm more inclined to go with edmunds not just because I'm a buyer, but because it's a calculated average of what the car is ACTUALLY SELLING FOR whereas KBB is an average of what the car is being LISTED for. Ideas or guilt tactics to sway the seller to my way of thinking?

 

5th gen preludes around that year and miles cost about $6500-7000+

If you have cash you can ask for like $6000

 

Honestly for the difference in price I'd go with the Del Sol and put the 3,000 you saved into the car. OR you could pay the 6 for the lude and have no money left overt to modify it...

 

The motor problems you mentioned don't sound too good. That said I still think you shouldn't get a Del Sol. Don't just jump on the first lude you see. It sounds alittle fishy.

Why whould the rear deck need replaced? Leak? Look for rust in the all familiar spots, and point out every little thing you see. Maybe he'll get tired of seeing you every day and sell you the car for $5000.

If you don't want a prelude just don't get the del sol, I guess you can tell I'm not a fan.

if the Del sol runs better buy it. Your for most interest was in a DD, so you should get something economical and of which doesn't require much in line of repairs. You'll have 3K to put into making it run perfect as well, and than later on you could do a h22 drop.

the sols do look a little girlie, but an old buddy of mine had one all done up and it looked pretty slick. Slam it, put a decent front fender/whole kit on, throw some sways in, and with money left over do some bolt on's.

My personal opinion (which means shieeeeet) the lude is better in almost every manner possible.

 

btw I dont really see FIF gens selln for $4500 alot. It will be hard to get it for that price, but if it needs painting and other stuff i guess it would be fare.

 

preludes generally never dip below 5k unless if its fixerupper or super high mileage. since the 1st 5thgens are running up on 10 years old, avg mileage is 100k, -10k per year about.. so the ones u see w/ high mileage.. do the math and see if its high. like 200k on a 99 is 100k+ over average. i dont think edmunds or kbb is accurate since diff areas have more of a certain cars available. preludes are pretty common in cali but they're still 5k at least. right now theres one going for 5k at 199k miles. i'm testing waters on my car right now at 6500. highest offer so far has been 5700 (some scammer wanted to give me full asking price and another wanted me to ship it out to him for 9k) but yeah... theres the numbers for u
