When I go over larger bumps or speedbumps, I can hear a clunking sound from the rear of the car, might be coming from the passenger side. I just changed both rear shocks (gotta love those snapping bolts) and I also double checked to see that my exhaust was secure and not hitting anything. What could be causing the clunking?

 

Are you lowered? Junk in your trunk (spare tire/jack no secure if applicable). Bushings on the LCA are in good shape? Nothing is loose underneath?

 

check your shocks something is loose

 

have you checked the condition of your rear trailing arm bushings? also do you have a rear sway bar, endlinks make clunking sounds when they are going out.

 

do you have a systyem? maby your 2 12"s are moving more than you think they are like mine did

 

The LCA bushings are in great shape, I replaced 3 of the 6 when installing the shocks.

Spare tire and jack are securely mounted, not moving.

I have one 12 but the clunking is the same from before I had it

Car isn't lowered.

Shocks were assembled correctly.

No rear sway bar.

Trailing arm bushing are cracked here and there, but they still work fine.

could be rear wheel bearing. grab the tire like a big steering wheel and shake it violently. if it has any play then you need to replace the rear hub assembly. About a $75 part.

 

No play in the rear wheel bearings either.

 

check the shock topmounts are torqued correctly and the spring properly seated

Check, they're fine too

 

It's still happening. I've isolated it to the right side of the car. When my left wheels go over a speed bump, no noise. When my right wheels go over a speed bump (right rear mainly) I hear a clunking, sounds sort of like metal bouncing up and down a couple times quickly, or being dropped and bouncing once after the first impact.

 

my trunk latch is set a little high so i can push my trunk dorn about a quarter of an inch and when i hit a bump it makes a noise like that, it might also be you spoiler or rear bumper being loose. also if you get time please bump my thread "my car keeps cutting out! Why!!" i am trial and can't afford to bump and waste a post, if you have any input i am welcome to here it. thanks, hope you figure it out.

 

saw you just changed rear shocks, are the 2 top shock bolts tight, the ones that go into your fenderwell into your interior? I've had to re-torque those before after putting shocks in because they come loose.

 

Well funny thing is it was making the same noise with the old shocks, and they were torqued tight. I'll double check the nuts though, as well as the bumper and trunk latch.

 

i still think the spring may be sitting slightly off centre too

I ain't the starter of this thread, but you may have answered the problem of my gf's car

 

Damn, I checked everything and no luck yet. When I assembled the struts/springs I made sure that both ends were seated correctly.

 

Check the compensator arm and make sure it is connected to the trailing arm and chassis, also inspect your XD XD XD XD trailing arm bushing... XD

I have the same problem with my 2004 Honda CR-V did you ever find out what it was?

 

I'd say trailing arm bushing is going bad... I just replaced mine last year with OEM and it made a world of difference.
