Quick Q ... How long should the Ru-2820 Conversion Take?
You've read through the howto on it, I assume.. you should be able to get a rough estimate on how long it will take just by looking at it. I did this a while back and it took about a half hour. The reason it took me that long was that I hacked up an Autozone filter to use, and I think it might have been slightly different than an OEM filter.
I had to shave off some of the inside of the K&N and even then it was a _very_ tight fit.
Not much of a chance of you screwing either the K&N or stock filter so bad that they won't go together. Figure 30 minutes to an hour of time to do this, to be safe.

Perfect Justin!!! Exactly the answer I was looking for!!
I didn't think it would take very long ... but having not tried it, I was worried about unexpecteds I might run into.
Thanks
Mike

Are you aware that K&N now produces a drop-in filter?
I have the RU-2820 and I highly recommend it. I had an AutoZone filter in my car at the time, so I hacked it up. What I ended up doing was pulling/breaking the epoxy off that held the paper and wire frame onto the plastic filter neck. At first it will seem like the 2820 will not fit over the OEM filter neck. What you need to do is get a hair dryer and heat up the rubber filter neck on the K&N filter. Do this for a couple of minutes, and the filter will go onto the OEM filter neck quite easily.
What you might also want to do is cut off the plastic where the epoxy used to be on the OEM filter neck. this will make it much easier to install the hose clamp around the K&N filter.
One last recommendation, break the epoxy w/ paper and wire remnants off of the end piece of the OEM filter (w/ the rubber-tipped nib). Use some very small screws (I used 4 small wood screws about 1/2" or maybe 3/4" long) to attach the OEM filter endcap to the end of the K&N filter. Drill small holes in the plastic endcap, place the endcap over the K&N filter (it's pretty much the exact same diameter), and then use a screwdriver to install the screws through the endcap into the rubber end piece of the K&N filter (they go in pretty easily).
In the end you will have a K&N filter that fits PERFECTLY like stock into your stock airbox, for only $35.

Go to http://integra.vtec.net/geeser/ru3130.html for instructions. But instead of using the K&N RU-3130, use the RU-2820. Here a couple pictures of the converted RU-2820.

Thanks all ... I now plan to tackle the conversion Monday night with some confidence.
I am aware that there is a K&N direct replacement ... and I'd probably use it too except for the fact it is not imported into Australia (I contacted our official distributor/importer)
I've already bought the 2820 now anyway ... $75 (US$43) ... yes our exchange rate is s#$t!!
Just one thing ... I assume that the cylindrical metal support/structure on the OEM (runs beneath the filter material for the length of the filter) needs to be cut back to form a flange for mounting the 2820? None of the instructions I have read seem to indicate this (I assume it is implied).

As for that metal structure, remove it completely. There is a small part of the plastic elbow that can be used as a flange to mount the K&N to, but it doesn't extend out very far. That's why I said to remove everything, including the epoxy that's on the base of the elbow (where the paper media and wire frame was attached). I was able to break it away from my stock filter (OEM replacement from AutoZone) with some ease.
Geez.. I dont recall the name of the aftermarket OEM filter replacement I had originally purchased, but it was so damn cheap that the filter had come off when I was trying to install it. The ENTIRE thing came right off, leaving not a single bit of glue.. So I was left w/ a nice black, clean elbow which I fitted the ru-2820 like a breeze. So yeah, all you really need is the black plastic part.
