Default PLX Wideband A/F Gauge and Controller install

Well, all my gauges have finally arrived. The list of components I plan to install are:

Defi Blue Racer Boost Gauge
Defi Blue Racer Oil Pressure Gauge
Defi Link Controller (Yes, I know I REALLY don't need this, but it recommended)
PLX Wideband A/F Gauge with Controller and sensor.

They are going to be installed on the driver side pillar. Not my favorite choice by far, but until someone releases a dash pod that does not cost a thousand dollars, the pillar will have to do.

I think the Boost and Oil pressure (with the link controller) will be pretty straight forward. I think I can splice into the current oil sensor. If not, I am sure a new sensor will not be to expensive. As for the boost gauge, Comptech told me the hook-up for the supercharger was easy.

However, when I opened the A/F gauge boxes, I got totally confused. The kit included a large screw in sensor which I assume goes somewhere in the exhaust system. I looked over the exhaust system and do not see anywhere to screw this in. All current places to screw in a sensor already have a sensor installed, and I am afraid if I replace any of these sensors with the one that came with the gauge, I will throw a CEL. I am thinking I am going to need to have someone weld a new screw mount into the system somewhere, does this make sense?

Also, the kit also has some small solder-able electrical components as well. They look like components you would find on a PC board. I have no idea what to do with these.

The instructions for installing are VERY VAGUE, so I am wondering if this is something I should have my mechanics do, instead of trying to do to it myself.

Have anyone installed this gauge before? I am getting into trouble trying to do this myself?

Thanks in advance.

Question #1, how are you planning on putting gauges on the driver a-pillar when there is an airbag there???

Do you have an Air/Fuel gauge, or an Exhaust Gas Temp guage???

Question 2:

can the guy that posted above me read?
yes the OP has a PLX wideband with A/F display.

I would call PLX. didn't you go to their shop and pick up?

question #3 Why do you really need an airfuel guage? Oil temp, oil pressure and boost.

personally, I would want to know if my brand new supercharged ride was leaning out at high rpm, or having another similar problem.. not to mention, if you go with k-pro when it comes out later a wideband is invaluable for tuning

The airbag is not in the pillar. We took the pillar cover off and checked that. Besides, I have engineered a pillar cover that will work the same as the OEM pillar cover if the airbag deploys. Nothing is getting screwed into the pillar itself, and the cover uses the same clips the OEM pillar uses.

The gauge is a Wideband Air/Fuel gauge, not exhaust gas temp gauge.'

Once an adjustable fuel tuning system is released for this motor, it will be helpful to see what the A/F is doing as I increase boost in the supercharger. Besides, being able to monitor A/F is always a good idea in a forced injected motor.

You'll need to have a shop weld up another 02 sensor bung for the wideband. All of the gauges should be fairly straight forward, on the oil pressure unit i would remove the OE oil press. sending unit put a "T" in its place, put the sensor back on and affix the sending unit for your gauge. If the included instructions aren't too great I'd search around for some better ones online or possible PDF's from other manufactures for the same gauge (s)

i'd say its definantly a DIY tho

Thanks Trevor. I was thinking I would have to have a second 02 senor bung welded in, but was not really sure. That will be the first thing I get done this weekend. I will stop by my mechanics on Thursday and have them suggest a location.

Once they are all in and working I will post along with some pictures.

Thanks again Trevor, you are the main man brother.

No problem Charlie, contact me if you have any issues during the install... I've put in all of those gauges before so I may be of some help

With the gauges there I was more concerned with gauges hitting you in face if they were deployed. Could that be a problem?

The new pillar cover is engineered with a chain leash. The cover will blow off and up towards the windshield (directed by the leash), so it will not reach my face and not hinder the side curtain or driver side airbags (hopefully). Since it can't be tested, I can't be certain it will work, but Physics indicate it should.

In any case, now that I actually have the gauges, these gauges are very light (No metal or aluminum in their construction), I honest don't think they would hurt anymore than the pillar cover itself, hitting you in the face.

Course, we hope we don't ever find out either way.
