Default idle repeadedly surging to 4500 rpms, then almost dies, any ideas?

here is the back story. I picked up a 91 accord with a f22a6. it wasn't running, the cam siezed and the cam gear broke off the cam.

I got a used replacement head, bolted it up. there are no timing marks on the pulley or any timing marks on the belt covers. no marks at all anywhere. so i stuck the dipstick in the #1 cylinder and brought it to TDC. rather than readjust the timing belt, I managed to slide it back onto the cam, also at tdc.

I start the car and now it surging big time. I figured that if the timing was off, it would just idle rough, but it is revving to 4500 smoothly and then almost dying. almost like someone is steadily pressing on the gas pedal.

I swapped the IACV and the FITV. same thing. new intake manifold gasket too.

with the motor running and the intake tube off, I put my finger over the small hole in the throttle body opening and the revs only go to 3500, but it doesn't stop surging.

there is almost no antifreeze in the motor right now. I don't run the engine for more than 20-30 seconds at a time though.
plus, the alternator, AC, and power steerig belts are disconnected.
everything is plugged in except the pcv valve. I put my finger over that hose too and it still does it.

I do realize that the motor has a balance belt, and that it may be off timing with the timing belt, but getting the crank pulley off is going to be an issue. I am just looking for other ideas before I have to go buy more tools.

any advice would be appreciated.

ok, I filled the motor with antifreeze/water. started it, and it still does the rev thing, but only to 3500 this time.

as a test, I put my foot on the brake, and put it in drive, and the rpms leveled out to 2200 rpms. but seconds later I felt two thumps from the motor, and it tried to push forward, and the rpms jumped to 3000 rpms for a second. I shut it off right away.

when the rpms were bottoming out, the oil light would flicker on. there is plenty of oil in the motor. if the oil pump gear is shattered, would that cause it to act like this?

besides the IACV and FITV, and a vacuum leak, what else can cause the RPM's to bounce around in neutral?

Ok,I drove a prelude that done the same thing. Its a vac. housing that is in front of the intake. There are two screws in the top of it and on the inside there is a thing that looks like a top (the spinning kind).Screw it all the way in and it should idle smooth. If it dosent then..good luck! Ill try to find a pic of it on accout of I dont really know what all the parts are called.

ok tried that. I was actually able to screw it in a few turns until it got snug. it didn't change a thing. still idling between 1400 and 3500 rpms. I even cleaned the screen on the iacv.

anyone else?

I have one more day before this wagon goes to the scrap yard.

hehe, might as well drive it there and see if it makes it.

ok, I found it. it was a leak in the gasket between the intake manifold and the head.

now that it is running, the oil light is on. thats a good indication why the original cam seized up.

For anyone with a similar problem, do a search in the prelude section. there were a lot more posts about idle issues. one of the threads there mentioned a high pitch intermittent whistle, which kinda sounds like a loose belt. thats what lead him to the intake manifold. Mine was doing the same thing.

thanks for the help.
