Default timingbelt out of sync?

Are the following symthoms to be connected with a timingbelt mis-sync?

low (700) and rough idle
a bit of smoke from the intake
flames and thunder from the exhaust when tapping the gas
engine stalls when gas is tapped
no power at all. Just enough for a low idle.

if yes.... then I know enough

Have you just replaced the timing belt? A belt that is a tooth retarded could cause low idle and lack of power. Does the smoke come from the intake after it stalls? Never seen the flames of thunder but maybe I just haven't been in the right storm.

Bit of smoke from the intake is indeed after it stalls. Never noticed it before.
Belt has been replaced a year (13 months) ago. Sounds like you've experienced something simular?

Check the timing with a timing light. If the belt jumped, you should be away from 16 deg BTDC. If the timing is off, set the engine to TDC (white mark on the crank pully) and pull the valve cover to look at the cam gears. The cam gears should be aligned with each other and pointing upwards.

What were the exact conditions under which this happened, i.e.: did the car just suddenly start acting like this or did it happen over time? I agree with the Dogginator on checking the timing. It would be an easy way to see if the belt skipped a tooth.

It was cold (freezing) and moist.
I took the car just 10 minutes before. So everything was warming up.
It happend suddenly when driving a constant 120km/h. So it did not happen over time.

Everything seems to point to the timing belt, and because of the huge flames en the bit of smoke from the intake I think it's the intake cam. Intake cam also is resposible for the ignition timing. The flames might indicate that the ignition as retarded waaaaaaaay to much now

LOL.

Well if you like flames more then power, then you should do that.
Because with this offset, the engine has just power to have e rough 700rpm idle. Nothing more.

But hey... if you like flames... feel free, hahahhaa.
I'll send you the exact details of this 'mod' by wednesday, when I checked the timingbelt, ok?

Yeah, it definately smells like a timing belt. Check to make sure the distributor is tight (so it didn't move to the retarded position) and if the belt has skipped, replace it. Don't just bump it back to the correct timing. If you keep the old belt, sooner than later it will break and it will bend the valves. Hopefully it didn't bend a valve this time around. An intake valve that is bent would, of course, not seal the cylinder and it would allow combustion gases to escape into the intake and cause the smoke you are describing. You are right, it could be retarded ignition timing and valve timing causing low cylinder pressure and slow burn times which is causing the air/fuel mixture to still be burning in the cylinder when the intake opens again.

Ok.. I checked the timing belt. Perfect tention, perfect timing oncrack and cams.

Now what's up?

So I checked the plugs, perfect
the wires, perfect,
the dissy... hmmmm. Lets try a spare part. That one works perfect.

So.. the dissy is the problem....

I opend the dissy and what was it.....

The rotor wasn't attached to the shaft. The screw that mounts the rotor to the shaft was gone. So, I found it again, put some locktide on it, put is back in place... and fired the bitch again.

FICTORY!!!! It worked out.

So we have one happy Orthello again.

Everybody thank's for helping me out.

Especially AutoEng2002Si many thanks!!! Take care withyou're back dude!

I allready posted that it is working well again.

I'm sure the MAP and TPS are correctly wired, else my Apexi V-AFC would not give the correct read-outs as it does now

I did the swap one year ago without one problem, except for last week when she suddenly fired and thunderd from the exhaust.

it turned out the be a screw in the dissy. The one that mount the rotor to the shaft. So the rotor wasn't turning very well, so a lot of missfires occured.
I put the screw back in place with some locktide, and the bitch is running agein as she used to.

Hell I love her!!!

I don't trade mine, as is has an almost brand new suspension, bushings, bearings, joints etc.
In a month or three a garrett T3 is mounted to the JDM B16A engine.
And in june The bitch will become a lady, as she gets a new dress.
Or in other words, the body will be repainted and all the rust will be removed.
So inJuly this lady is ready to visit some car shows and beauty contests.
