You'd have to take out the old rack to replace the seal anyhow, and I's pretty sure the seal is cheaper than a new/reman rack. If you have a helms, the time, the patience, the space and beer, by all means just remove and overhaul the rack, get new inner rods, boots, and outter rods call it a day. But if downtime is important, you can just get another rack and rebuild it still to keep as a spare unless you want the core charge back.

It is better to replace the whole rack and pinion with a remanufactured one, as there may be worn parts inside the old one.

True that. If there are metal particals circulating which caused seal failure in the first place, replacing the pump may be a good idea too, unless you want to completely overhaul the pump to clean it out. Most rack-pinion remanufactures will only make the warranty valid on the rack if you also replace the pump as well, so keep that in mind, unless you want to convert to a manual rack or make your p/s rack into a manual by looping it.

Its not that much compared to $900+ for a mercedes or bmw or audi rack. Dont even ask about the newer ones with electronic servo assist, which is a seperate module and costs a lot as well.
