First off I am not the best person on here with wording so I hope I can help you out a little here and not confuse you more but here it is in a small nutshell. Cause you are asking a very broad questions that can cover pages and pages of information over various topics (so read as much as you can here cause this is by no means all of it, rather this is bearly scratching the surface).

Probably 75% (maybe more) of the turbocharged cars on this board are using hybrid turbochargers, so yes work and work quite well. As far as problems with them, that mostly gets into manufacturing and some are better than others obviously. Garrett, Turbonetic, Borg Warner, Holeset, Precision (garrett based), ITS, Full-race, etc... there is a ton of turbo manufacturers/ distributors offering turbochargers... too many for me to go through briefly in this thread. I think I named most of the popular quality units you will find here but there is more I am sure I missed... and there is alot cheap substandard junk on ebay so be aware of who manufacturers the turbo your looking at and do some research to make sure they are quality.

Anyways.

A "hybrid" turbo uses parts from two different families of turbochargers to create a completely new turbo for various reasons. Take for example a T3/T4. This turbo uses T3 turbine parts combined with T4 compressor pieces to make a turbo that fits a certain horsepower and displacement range better.

(check out http://auto.howstuffworks.com/turbo1.htm or http://www.turbobygarrett.com/....html for some basics if this part lost you or you want to learn more.)

With alot of people here wanting to maximize the powerband/ output (which varies of course) the hybrid units can be used to cater to our small displacement and high rpm motors. Increasing boost responce (smaller turbine section) while still maintaining the high volume output and efficiency benefits (bigger potential hp that does not fall off at high rpm) of a larger compressor is kinda the general idea for us IMO.

I am sure others can add some more information I am overlooking or did not detail in my breif summary.

exactly what I was thinking, in fact I edited in a little more information after reading it agian but I had to try to contain my thoughts cause it is WAY to much information for a simple post.
