what did i do to my tranny?
downshifts are beginning to get very rough and clunky especially from 3rd to 1st gear.
earlier this week i did something stupid at the dragstrip. i don't know exactly how it happened but i think i revved the motor to 11k in neutral and then stepped it down to 1st gear. i made sure to be easy on the clutch but somehow instead of catching 1st gear it slipped and began grinding very audibly. does anyone know what i need to repair or replace?

Motorcycle trannies are Sequential in nature... You can slam gears, third to first, but you shouldn't rev the bike to redline then try and ram it into gear... that cant be good.

This isn't what I was looking for because it doesn't give reasons why. I'll see if I can dig up the article/book later on.

I believe that's call matching revs... What I do is I go from 3rd to 1st doing this I down shift to first and while having the clutch in I rev up twice and then let go the clutch. I did find it kind of hard at the beginning (because all the stuff you have to do at once) but now is a piece of cake... it gets harder when you have to do all that and then enter a corner while braking as well...

do u have to drop the whole motor or is it possible just to work from removing the clutch cover?

if your tranny components are cassette in nature your can poll it out through the clutch side without drop the motor.
And yes, you should rev match, I thought we all new that as we all have driven for years.
