just bought myself a 98 gsr and im getting horrible gas milage i filled my tank and driving like 95% city driving i only got 220 on a full tank till my gas light turned on is there an explaination for this?

 

Is your car modded? 220 for almost all city driving doesn't sound that terribly bad. But maybe I am mistaken. I think this has been covered a few times. Maybe you can find some help in these threads. I did a search on gas mileage and got 126 results. Good luck.

nah the only thing it has is a k&n intake and nology wires and thats it

 

Check your o2 sensors. Change them and that should improve your gas mileage some. Also, it's summer and I know I tend to drive a little harder. Cruise when you get the chance. Don't take it above 3k rpm's. Should clean things up. Also check all grounds.

how many miles on the car?

because i had a gas tank leak that was causing me to get 220 per tank id jack the car up and smell the gas tank, and obviously just look for leaks. it doesn't show a check engine light always either! the gas would evaporate without leaving a puddle underneath the car either. and new 02 sensors will help too...

 

I don't think it sounds that bad. I get about that much when I drive 100% city (like 2-3 mile trips at a time).

I still get almost 35mpg when I'm 100% highway.

I concur...my GS-R gets about 240-250 on 10.5 gallons freeway mixed with city. I don't think i hit VTEC once. So 220ish all city is about right.

Just curious, where it was leaking from?

 

on my turbo gsr i get around 260-280 to a tank, my driving is split about evenly between city and highway. if you're getting less than this on a stock car then something's definitely wrong. i was getting 33-34 mpg when stock.

 

well thanks for the help but does anyone have a suggestion on where to purchase O2 sensors i mean the car just passed inspection and had no problems passing. and replying to how many miles on the car? it has about 87,600

 

it was rusting badly in a few places... but it was leaking from one of the top edges. hard to explain

 

i drive like an old man so i get 400 miles on a full tank on my gsr. only mods are cold air intake, dc 4-2-1 2 piece ceramic header, and a invidia test pipe.

 

Check your tire pressure too, believe it or not that effects gas mileage too.

 

I get 33-34 mpg on the highway (anywhere from 330-380+ miles a tank, depends when i fill up)
In the city it is a good bit less about 26mpg.

Do a full turn up, plugs, fuel filter, cap and rotor, oil and filter, air filter, etc. Check/replace o2 sensor and check to see if your cat is clogged.
That is where I would start.

I consistently get 300+ miles to a tank, mostly city driving, and that's with 1/4 million miles on the engine. Since I replaced my O2 sensor, I can easily get 400 miles to a tank if it's all highway (no or very few stops).

Do a tune-up, and always make sure your tires are properly inflated.

 

Sometimes I'm astounded at the mileage numbers that some people get with GSR's. I've got a 97 GSR that's stock internally (save for ITR cams, but that didn't change my mileage at all) with bolt-ons and the stock P72 OBDII ecu, and I've consistantly gotten between 25-30 MPG. I drive a mix of city and freeway, I've never driven a straight highway run to calculate it's real highway mileage. Going by the quite variable "miles per tank", I don't think I've ever gotten over about 270 miles on a tank, and I usually fill up at under 1/8th of a tank left. The engine is in quite good running condition, as I'm a mechanic by trade. Ignition parts are all fairly new, as are O2 sensors, and I clean my fuel injectors every 10k miles or so. I don't think I drive with a lead foot, but I'm not a pansy on the throttle, either. I rarely hit VTEC, let alone the IAB's. When someone says they get 30+mpg or 300+miles per tank, I'm like

 

I don't see how ITR cams would NOT affect your fuel economy, seeing as how they have greater lift and duration than GS-R cams, which would require more fuel to keep the correct A/F ratio.

You say you fill up at under 1/8 tank, how many gallons do you put in? I've filled up tons of times with the needle sitting right on the red mark.

 

how come so many ppl are sayin they dont hit vtec in there gsr why is my question i dont understand its there for a reason isnt it

 

i agree with 98 teggy. As soon as the road gets twisty, you better believe im using vtec

 

If 98 teggy used some basic punctuation maybe he'd be able to understand that just because vtec is there, it doesn't mean you have to hit it in every gear, every time.

That said, I never hit vtec. EVER. But then i have a b18b


Regarding the topic post: as a sidenote, hitting VTEC does NOT increase gas mileage. Quite the opposite

 

does ur integ have a map sensor. cuz a intake would get u worse gas milage. get a header and cat-back exhuast instead
