My carbon fiber hood is beginning to oxidize. any way to re-clear coat it or paint carbon fiber and have it last?

 

Hmm. I didn't know that carbon fiber oxidize. but don't know what to do. best of luck.

I see this a lot... Best thing I've seen done was use a rubbing compound then a pollishing compount... Didn't get rid of it completely, but it looked 10x better...

on my old civic I used peanut butter, wiped all the grease off, sanded it a little, and painted clearcoat on it.

Didn't fade for the whole 2 years before I sold it.

 

you can sand it down and re-clear it or paint over it. although i dont know why people paint over carbon. to each his own it can be done.

I paint matched mine because i was tired of it fading and CF hoods attract theives and cops.

I don't know who started the whole "Man Cf is so beautiful" Thing. Because I think CF is ugly.

like i said to each his own most people do CF for the looks ive seen some pretty silly things done like CF fenders color matched to the car Y???? but the CF hood was CF... i know some people that have some painted areas on the hoods for 2-tone pait jobs. but i dont like the entire thing painted. me my car is half CF i like it and it gets me plenty of points at the shows...

Get it compounded and waxed at a detail place, that will make it shine like new, trust me. I know this much becuase i work at a detail place, lol.

Clearcoat OR gelcoat.

I'd recommend testing any product you wish to use on the carbon fiber part in an inconspicious location first. Some products used for clearcoat might make a gelcoat appear hazy.

If you have a clearcoat then normal polish and wax should work. If you have a gelcoat, I'd recommend Meguiar's marine line or the 3M marine line, which ares made for boats with gelcoats. If you need to have a gelcoat repaired, a boat shop might be willing to do it for you.

Temporary fix. Basically the oxidation will look less noticeable if you add oils to it. The peanut butter trick is similar to the baby oil trick used on exterior trim by some people.

Here's what I'd recommend:

First spot test a polish. If it seems to remove it, do the entire hood (don't forget you should have tested to make sure it doesn't damage the hood in an inconspicuous spot first).

If the polish doesn't work, move up to a compound instead. A compound might recommend you follow up with a polish or scratch remover (usually recommended on the bottle).

A glaze might not be a bad idea here (hides some scratches and adds oils back to the clearcoat).

Follow with a nice wax to protect all your work and the hood. Do a regular wash aqnd occassionally a polish and wax and you should be good.

&lt;-- Also a detailer. Been doing it for ~5 years.

 

why dont you just throw a non opaque paint through it ie how the frearri is, it uses a semi clear tint and shows the actual weave of the carbo strands weaving with each other and from a far ditances looks completaley stock

 

I heard to you can baby oil it.
