Default indecisive about buying motor need opinions

I just recently found a LS(B18A) swap on a local forum, it's only the block and the head no tranny. Only problems the motor has is it smokes like a freight train. The same guy also has a B16 that needs rings, not too sure though compression check was done and 3 cyclinders were the same while one was 60ish.

I'm looking to swap this motor into my EK but I still need mounts, shift linkage, ecu, axles, and swap rings or new pistons into the block. My overall goal of the car is to later build a ls/vtec for boost. Price of the Ls is $150 and the B16 is $90.

My question is should i just wait for another motor to come across, or should i purchase one of the motors for a build? I mean my car runs fine right now i just want a swap in it.

well its up to you but if you are buliding a motor, you could just buy itand rebuild from the bottom up. you could buy them both so you have the head and block. then you can take your time piecing it together

well i've thought about taking my time and building the Ls up not too interested in the b16. My only problems is by the time i've spent $$ getting it ready i probably could've had a complete motor you know?

yeah thats true, but at least you know everything is in good condition. rather than buying another swap and still having to fix something if its not running right

You never know, you might spend more than the cost of a good ls fixing the busted *** one.

Buy a good ls and a b16 tranny. No headache.

If you can get the b16 block & head for $90, definately get that. The head is worth more than the b18a longblock and the b16 shortblock put together.

This way you can rering the b16 for cheap, add a few misc parts to help freshen it up, work the kinks out of your swap, then find a b18 shortblock to build for ls/vtec. I'd rather have a good head that more displacement, esp since its cheaper to buy a b18 block than a vtec head.

sorry i meant the B16 is just the block no head or tranny.

I think that i may be able to find a complete swap for less than what it would cost me to build up this Ls if i bought it.

Then by all means, get the B18. If not that one, do another. Hone it out, build it up, then run the LS head for a while, assuming its in okay condition. People have made 300+ whp on a stock B18A/B, and 400+ on the stock head.

The only reason I'd use a b16 block is if I got it for free and had a spare vtec head.
