Default No speedometer, no vtec, no codes comming up

So I just got my jdm 98 spec motor put in my 2000 itr and it's running perfect with no check engine. So I take it out for a test drive and find out my speedometer is not working and I can't seem to hear or feel any vtec kick in. So I thought maybe my check engine light was dead. I unplug my map sensor and my check engine light comes on so I reset the ecu unplug my vss and start the engine, no check engine light at all then I do the wire thing in the blue diagnostic plug and turn the key on. Check engine stays on but no flashes. From what I read if there is no vss signal I should be getting a light correct? Anyone have any ideas what could be wrong? Please help.

Check oil level first for the Vtec issue, however they can be inter-related and be a VSS issue, but I would check the oil first.

To bad your not closer, we could test with my spare VSS.

Just checked the oil and the level is at the second dot on the dip stick. And by the way I had to do that trick with the wires for the vtec pressure sensor. But shouldn't I be getting a check engine light for a vss?

I didn't get any CEL's when I was on track and the VSS was acting up. Could be a faulty unit, and it would explain your Vtec and Spedo issue. It's either going to be in your "wiring trick" or the VSS itself.

u can unplug your vss all day long and wont get a CEL. if your speedo isnt working, you wont have vtec. sounds like the connector or plug is bad for the vss. check the connectors and maybe put some of that electrical grease on the connetors to see if that helps. also check that you have current at the connector. if that fails then the vss itself is probably shot.

I forgot to mention when I was adding fluid to the trans I tried to take out the vss and took off the two bolts on the top instead of the one holding it down. I pulled on it and the top of the vss came off. I just snapped it back on and put the bolts back in could that have damaged anything?

could have, although I have done the same in the past but it still worked fine after I put it back together. just make sure its together correctly. take it out and take it apart again, and then put it back together carefully.

Save yourself the trouble's bud, just get another VSS and go from there. It's either what you've done (trick, pulling the top off) or that it's a faulty unit.

Thanks for the help guys I'll clean it a little and check for voltage and if nothing works I get a new one. And by the way what should I do with the left over clip that I got my swap out of? Are they worth anything?

when u pulled just the top portion off ur vss , there is a little pin that goes in there...its possible that when u pulled it off it fell out, and u didnt notice it. Thats probably why its not working...and also the reason for no vtec.

When fitting a new clutch last year i forgot to plug the VSS back into the top of the gearbox and as soon as i started driving the CEL came on and i had no speedo. Plugged it back in again and CEl went off once i started engine. My car is a JDM 96spec so maybe its slightly different to US cars....?

No VSS will mean no VTEC... VTEC won't engage unless you're driving faster than 15 MPH or so. I remember fighting that back in my stock autocrossing days, trying to get a good launch at high RPM didn't work out well.

So, yeah, you broke your VSS.

Took the plug off and shined a light into the vss conector saw some green corrosion in there. I took it out and cleaned it up but I can't test the car again yet because I have no rad support and body work (started jdm conversion) once I get body work on i'll take it for a test before I buy a new vss. BTW thanks for all you input guys.
