2003 Civic - pinging
Hi,
I bought this 2003 Honda Civic last month. The manufacture 3 year warranty is
over last november 2006. However, the dealer gave me a 3 month warranty when I
bought this vehicle last month. The vehicle is giving a pinging noise even when I slightly step on the pedal. I'm running premium gas and I'm still getting this sound. Its hardly audible when the windows are closed. But when the window is open you can hear the noise clearly (not very loud, but a mild clicking noise).
I took this vehicle to the same dealer. After the mechanic took it to a test drive and
looked at the vehiche, he had a good discussion with the representative. The representative later told me that they were not able to hear any sound from the
engine. He adviced me to run a higher octane gas, which I'm doing now with NO
results. He also asked me to call him if the sound becomes more audible.
What should I do now? Is the dealer liable to fix this when the vehicle is inside the
3 month warranty? Or is this a defect in the vehicle which cannot be fixed? What if
the dealer says he is not able to hear any sound again - if I take it back to him?
Should I take the vehicle to a Honda dealer to check for the problem? Will it help?
Please advice as this vehicle is a huge investment for me.

I am assuming you bought the car from a USED car dealer? If they are giving you problems, and you can OBVIOUSLY hear something but they are telling you no...
I would take it to the Honda dealer and have them diagnose the problem or at least give you an idea of what might be wrong, IN WRITING.
This way, you can bring the writing to the used car dealer, which would be more of incentive to fix it. If they are calling you a liar for hearing a noise, it must be true if Honda diagnoses it right?
I would assume that this would help you, depending on what the terms of the warranty are.

Why are you running premium gas? If your car is a base civic, just run regular, premium decreases mileage, and doesn't amount to anything. But do what portaman03 said and take it to a Honda Dealer to have it get checked out.
i had the same problem cause for a while i use 89 octane and it start pinging, and i was like wtf, so i went back to 87 octane and it stop pinging, or not as loud, but it work going back to 87

This is true, my 01 Civic and a few others I know of have the same issue.
I guess our cars have noisy valves from the get-go.
Are you sure it's more of a 'pinging' sound?
Or more like a subtle 'TicTicTicTicTicTic'.. That increases when the air conditioner or heater are on?

the sound is a clear pinging sound. It is NOT rhythmic. I understand the tic tic tic sound... u can hear it in most civics. but, this is a clear clicking noise right when i accelerate and its not rhythmic.
I ran the vehicle with all 3 types of gas...87, 89 & 91 to no avail. i think ur right that i need to take it to a honda dealer, but i was worried whether the current 3 month warranty will become invalid if i take it to another mechanic? will it?
YES, bought this car from a well known used car dealer.

I just got an 02 civic from a used dealer about 2 months ago. 2 weeks after, it
started pinging with acceleration then one day stopping for a stop light the car just
died. Got it started back up and it was making the nastiest knock ive ever heard
took to mech. and found out a crankbearing failed and tore the bottom end up. So i had to get a new (33,000) engine. So i would take it to Honda A.S.A.P while you still have the warranty. Good Luck
