tranny fluid
The dealer may tell you that engine oil will work, just tell him to shut up and buy some of their manual transmission fluid. Others recommend GM synchromesh for those with gimpy synchros.

Modern engine oils have different formulations in them now than what they did years ago, and some of the additives in them may not be optimal for transmissions, such as the friciton modifiers and dispersant agents. I don't have the equipment to actually test the difference and give you an empirical result. But I can tell you that if Honda developed something specifically for your transmission, then you probably should use it. Also others, including me have noticed a postive difference when using Honda MTF compared to engine oil.

If you want to use engine oil, feel free, I wont stop you. But don't complain if your transmission experiences adverse performance.

Edit: the GM synchromesh stuff is suggested for those that are experiencing some shifter notchiness because of synchros on their way out. It's kind of a bandaid soultion but one that does help reduce the problem until you can put the $$$ together for a rebuild or new tranny.

I second the honda MTF, I wouldnt use engine oil. spend the extra couple bucks on the mtf for peace of mind.

oil hasnt changed that much since 88.. manuals say to use engine oil. thats what you should use. mtf is fine but costs more and isnt worth it.
