Default Engine Oil as Transmission Fluid!?

I trust my mechanic, he used to work at Honda and seems to really know his stuff, but today when he swapped my transmission fluid I lost some faith in him.

When I saw him refilling it I noticed he was using engine oil, I was like "hey wait, where's the tranny fluid?" He said "For a manual transmission car 5W30 is 5W30, whether it is in the tranny or the engine it's the same." I asked why stores would sell manual transmission fluid as a separate product from engine oil if it in fact was the same thing, and he said it was "just to make more money." He also said that every manual car he has ever owned he has used engine oil as tranny fluid with no problems.

That seems weird to me, now I am nervous about driving around with a tranny full of engine oil. Is this alright to do or should I go back there with tranny fluid and tell him to change it to the real stuff?

Honda manual transmissions can use regular 5w-30 engine oil as transmission oil without a problem. However, I do recommend Honda MTF or other transmission-specific oils (such as Pennzoil Synchromesh or BG Synchro Shift II) because they have additives to make them better suited for transmission use.

I put honda MTF in my Accord and it shifts MUCH smoother now.
