Default Engine Oil and Tranny Fluid Question...

Does MTF burn like engine oil burns? I hear you can use 10w30 engine oil in a manual tranny...does Honda MTF and Mobil1 10w30 synthetic engine oil have similar additives? And which performs better...Royal Purple or Mobil1?

Well engine oil is not suposed to burn its supposed to lubricate.... you can use 10w30 in your trans but I would reccomend honda MTF.

yes it lubricates, but i meant when it does burn because of the intense heat (ie. when in vtec)...does the tranny ever get so hot that it'll burn the oil or tranny fluid?

the smoke you see is fuel, its because your car runs very rich.....

mtf is probably damn close to 10w-30, but it will be conventional oil, i doubt they will put synthetic into a tranny, just use mtf.....if you need something better, gm syncromesh....

royal purple is "better" in the fact that it will last you longer, but mobil will already last 8k, and that is much longer than you want to go on one filter....so it really makes no difference....

Yeah just get some Honda MTF. I put regular oil in the transmission in my 95, and the shifting because so incredibly stiff-it took ALL OF MY ARM STRENGTH to downshift.

If you look in your owner's manual, it explains that conventional oil is okay, but "switch it as soon as you can to MTF." As soon as I put in the MTF, the shifting became much easier.

It's wicked cheap anyways. It's like 50 cents more than a quart of oil so just be rich and spring for it lol.

It shouldn't burn either way though.

For my year Accord it says to use 10W-30 you won't hurt your tranny by putting 10W-30 in it, go talk to the lead tech at a dealership and they will tell you the same thing. I have been running Mobil 1 synthetic 10W-30 for close to 5 years now and over 100,000 miles with no issues.

Oh yeah, your tranny isn't burning oil or MTF when VTEC engages that as said earlier is your car running rich when going into VTEC. And if it smells like burning oil it may be your engine burning the oil.

You don't really need to check it, but you basically let out one of the plugs on the side, and you put more in until it comes out.

You shouldn't need to check it though. It just needs to get changed at like 90k miles I think. Consult your manual.
