advancing or retarding your distrubitor?

which way is which when you turn your dist. cap? is going forward retarding it or advancing? anyone knows? someone's got to know. thanks in advance.

Rotating the distributor toward the rear of the car is advancing the timing. Get a timing light to confirm timing though.
