Hey,

got a little problem with my eg hatch right now...it's got a boosted 99 y8 in it and its burning a bit of oil. I know vtec sometimes burns a little oil but this is a bit more serious. It's not noticeable when the car is idling or running at a constant speed, but only when I accelerate quickly. A light blue haze forms behind the car if I really get on the gas, especially at full boost. I concluded it to be the piston rings...nothing in the coolant, no other color irregularities anywhere. I haven't done a compression test but the next time I'm home I'm planning on doing that.

Anyone have any idea?

 

Just do a compression test, do add-a-cap-of-oil after testing each cylinder to determine if it is the rings (assuming you know about that)

 

i would just do a compression test and then see whats happens

 

try the compression test, would nearly say its rings anyway, but get them done as soon as because you will only screw up your big end bearings aswell, because with rings gone comes lack of oil pressure, then this leads to no oil be pussed around big end bearings

nope don't know what it is haha...any directions?

 

Check out the turbo seals, on my old z6 setup I thought the motor was beat, it smoked under boost also but at idle it was fine. turns out to be the turbo seals the motor was perfectly fine. Just my .02

ive got the same problem with my boosted sedan. got a compression leakdown test and results were 35% 25%25%24%i already rebuilt my turbo, im getting ready to tear the block down and check out those rings myself. let me know how your project goes.

do you live close to king motorsports in milwaukee?

thats where i bought my hatch...a couple miles form there

Super simple, run the compressions test as normal for each cyl, then add some oil down the sparkplug tube and check again. If the pressure goes up by a lot it means your rings are bad, otherwise low compression is more likely valves.

 

Your valve seals may need to be replace. They go out fast with boost.

Definitely piston rings. I had the same problem and after I replaced the piston rings, it went away. Make sure you have the cylinders honed.

 

Good news! i think , so i got creative and took my turbo manifold off, plugged my oil lines and ran the motor no turbo. kicked out a lil oil then she ran fine,shut her down. i pulled the plugs and cleaned em, put em back in. started her back up and ran her for alil bit, no black smoke like before, ( shes running rich so she does blow a lil black smoke). i puled the plugs and they werent oiled up like before. so i realize the turbo has just gone *** up.
