how to isolate a rod knock?
I am just wonderin. If my car has a noise and i think its a rod knock, how would i go about isolating each cylinder until the noise goes away. My question is wats the safe way to do it? just pull the plug wire for each cylinder or shoudl i ground each out with a test light? wouldnt pullin the plug wire out damage the icm and coil?
if you have a rod nocking, pulling a plug wire will do you no good...simply because the rotating assembly is....well...still rotating. The only way to truly tell is to tear it down and check bearing surfaces. What sound are you hearing?

its is posible to identify A bad rod bearing by eliminating the ignition better to ground out the wire just pulling the plugwire can damage the coil. If you ground out the ignition the bearing noise will decrease due to the fact the load is removed from the rod. your basicly listening for a change in the sound it helps to use a stethoscope
go ahead and pull your oil pan and check it out,, your going have to anyways if your rods are knocking,, but then again ive seen many cars knock like a jehovah witness and still run for many miles, i think if you just pull a wire then your not going to be able to tell from the nosie itll make from missing that cyl.
