i dont know for sure, but if you look at the sensor itself, i cannot see why it would not work anywhere close to a cylinder.

On a B18a block we chose to remove one of the mounting bolts for the alternator bracket and use this as the new location for the Knock sensor.

Using a 10.9 mm drill bit, opened up the hole on the bracket and the block. Then carefully tap the hole with a 12 mm x 1.25 thread pitch tap. Be sure to clean up the shavings and then screw the knock sensor. This will keep your ECU from throwing any codes.

Here you can see the knock sensor in its new location.

thanks for the response. anyone know about the jdm d15b?
or, just to prevent the code, how about mounting it to the firewall(plugged in of course).

emissions people-i dont really care if the sensor functions as designed.

That C-Speed writeup is sweet.. I wasnt really looking for the info, but god knows KS's are a pain to get to especially if you break it.

I had to buy a cheap 22mm socket and grind the wall down to make it thin to fit in the space between the manifold and the KS.

At any rate, as far as on the d15b, id mount it like pictured instead of in place of a mount bolt or especially on the firewall (why put an extra useless hole, that would not be threadable on the firewall). Besides all that, I dont know how much vibration the firewall would give, which could possibly throw a code anyways???

But heres a pic of the back of a b16 block if it helps.

they have a write up on here how to disable the knock Sensor, you just need to hit up radio shack.

on an OBD2 car, do you think its really needed? my engine makes so much noise, that im affraid the KS picks this up and retards the timing. since whenever I hit a bump, i lose alot of power

The knock sensor circuitry in every ECU is tuned to listen for a particular range of frequencies. Those frequencies and their balance will change depending on where the sensor is located, and what block it's on, mainly because of the way sound travels through metal, and how the thickness, bracing and shape of the metal between the sensor and the cylinder with the knock influence it's spectral content.

That said, if you put a knock sensor on your B20 non-VTEC and use a P72ECU, yeah, it'll work, but I seriously doubt it'll work anywhere near as well as it will on a B18C1 with the sensor in the right place.
