Default advancing timing benificial?

we just put a set of skunk2 stage 2s and portflow head components on my friends gsr. we started to tune it and got it running really strong. got good settings on the afc and cam gears but....

didnt mess with the timing, but have heard that achiving the correct timimng can play a big role in the power band.

can anyone verify this? what exactly will advancing or retarding the timing do for the motor itself? is it worth it? whats an ideal setting without pinging?
