don't listen to him...he obviously knows nothing at all or maybe had one bad experience and is blaming it on the whole company
K&N filters are great and I've used them multiple times. I have not long ago bought the filter re-charge kit and cleaned up my filter and it did an amazing job....I let it dry and it worked awesome.

Well I dunno 'bout ya'll, but my K&N RU-2820 filter is still going strong since I first did my DIY Icebox setup back in November 2001. That's right, the same filter for the past 5 1/2 years and 150,000 miles, all on one recharge kit. I'm just now down to the end of my recharge kit and needing to get another one.
$30 filter and $10 recharge kit for 5+ years, sounds like a pretty damn good investment to me.

what about those filters they sell in autozone. Are they good or crappy?

To the OP: you don't want to just wash it out with water. The K&N needs to be sprayed with the special oil after it has been washed so that it does not allow debris to flow right through into your engine. If you just wash it and then don't apply the oil, you're really diminishing its filtering capability.
