how to check motor?
i know when a motor is in a car, you can perform a compression test to check the health of the motor. my question is how do you check one not running in a vehicle? is there anything particular to look for besides the obvious (ie sensors, rust etc.). i searched, but don't know if i'm wording this correctly. thanks

They cost about $200 though
. Maybe you can rent one from somewhere.
Also, I'd at least pop off the valve cover and inspect the valvetrain for excessive wear. Maybe even turn the engine over by hand to make sure there's no binding or bent valves.
Oh, and you can also do a leakdown test. That should probably be #1 thing to check.</TD></TR></TABLE>
this is a good idea
you could also find a transmission and bolt a starter up to do a compression test.
