Default EGR Valve

Does anyone know what happens to the funcionality of the engine if your EGR Valve goes bad?

I'm still trying to chase this surging problem down and have replaced just about everything except the EGR, TPS and MAP sensors.

Way back a few years ago, I did a complete head package install from Gude Performance, and had to of course remove everything. During this process, sensors were uninstalled and parts were cleaned. I have this sneaking suspision that either one of the sensors went out during that process, or the TPS sensor was installed wrong, OR there were crappy numbers put into the ECU mapping by Carb Conn when they did my Hondata.

I've taken the car back to them and asked if they would check the maps, and they of course say, that there is nothing wrong with their work and for me to check everything first. It's strange because occasionally I will get a CEL while driving in 4th gear at a low rpm. Now, when they put these Hondata systems in the car, they turn off all sensors except for 4 of them. Which ones, I don't know exactly, but will be posting this on the Hondata forum as well to try and figure out which ones are still active.

Could you explain your "surging" problem a bit more?

When you get a CEL, whats the code?

The surging takes place in three separate instances.

A) If you release the clutch slowly and allow the idle to start the car rolling and continue along for a few feet, it starts a mild surging and with help from my wornout motor mounts and suspension, it snowballs into a raring action pretty quickly to the point where you have to either shift to second or disengage the clutch to calm it down.

B) (Most Common) Starting from a stop, normal acceleration there are a number of "hitches" in the power band from 1000 to 2900 rpm the worst being at 2900. After that, it purrs along just fine. Also, when shifting into a higher gear, if the rpms drop into that area, there is another surge and very noticable power loss.

C) While cruising there is a constant surging while keeping the throttle at 5-10% or where ever it is normally at. This is extremely annyoing and makes me shift gears alot or just drive in 4th, speeding up and slowing down to mask the problem.

Now, I havn't tested the CEL code to see what it is, partly becuase I don't have a scanner and was also misinformed by my dealer that they would have to remove the eprom to test it. I just asked about that on the Hondata Forum. (they say you don't have to remove anything to read the code) -I'll jump the svc connector next time it comes on and count the CEL flashes. There are only 4 sensors still being monitored by this Hondata unit, and if I could find out which ones they are, I would replace them all!

Since all of these surging related issues occur either at idle or up to 2900, I'm wondering if it could be related to a bad or misaligned TPS sensor.
