Default adapter flange ffor 38->44mm wastegate... bad?

http://www.atpturbo.com/Mercha...e=FLS

looking at one of these so I dont have to trust someone to hack on my custom manifold... I use to run a 38mm gate but want to go to a 44mm gate since I will be running a larger turbo at minimal amounts of boost through low gear.

what are the opinions on an adapter like this... looks quality but has anyone used it? think it will be a restiction and not worth it (well until I can change the manifold flange at a later date)??? or do you think the bigger gate will help no matter what compared to the 38mm, even if slightly resistricted???

any opinions are welcomed.

someone posted this same question last week, search and you should be able to find it...
It seems badass tho and I think the general consensus was that it shouldn't hurt performance at all, good luck.

I looked and I did not see the thread, you have a link by chance... I tried a variety of keywords.

I apologize in reposting something so quickly after there was another thread about it, I just could not find the other one.

it was either in FI forum or welding/fab forum.

I just ordered one anyways... I guess I will find out first hand since I cannot find that thread about them on here.

im thinking about picking this up so i can fit a 38mm wg onto 44mm flanged mani. wondering if you ever got this adapter flange? what do you think? thanks

It does not work that way...

I think if your manifold is flanged for a 38mm gate then you are wasting your money on a 44mm gate because of the restriction. If you gonna upgrade later anyway then I guess it doesn't hurt. I had full-race convert mine from 38 to 44. It was not to expensive at all, about 3x the price of that adapter I think.

I like it alot and it will suit my needs until I can find someone to modify my manifold at a later date, or just go to a new manifold design all together... there just is very few people I could trust hacking on my custom manifold and tig'n a new flange on. Most of them are not local to me and those that are, are chassis guys and extremely busy with bigger things.

Needless to say, I like it alot and it works perfectly for me.

We don't really recommend it because it does create a bottle neck

Yea, I do not plan to run it for an extended period of time... more a temp thing until I can get a welder I trust to mod my manifold or maybe go to a slightly different manifold all together.

IMO you should have waited to see how the 38mm performed with the new turbo. that way you could have saved on buying a new gate and adapter. if the 38 wasnt holding boost properly then you could have just gotten a new flange welded. anyways good luck with the adapter let us know the results.

PS what mani and turbo are you using?

To give you an idea of overall flow, a 38mm tube has the same area as a 38mm valve opened 9.5mm. It would probably have to open more due to pressure drop, pressurized gasses, and changing directions & whatnot, but it gives you an idea. I can't recall how much a 38mm wg will open, but it seems like its the tube thats the bottlekneck.

FWIW, the guys at the local shop don't even sell anything smaller than 44mm. They will order 38mm for someone if they want it, but won't install it.

The 38mm wastegate was fine, I used it for quite a while and it may have done well agian, but I sold it cause I was also going to change manifolds at some point in putting things back together. Needless to say I did not and since I had the money to do it... I bought the 44mm and will eventually change the wastegate tube/ flange on the manifold or have a new manifold built.

custom manifold and precision turbo.

I ran the Adapter from ATP without any problems. The boost was regulated fine no creeping at all.

I used it with a Neukin Manifold and GT35R
6XX hp.

wait so why doesnt it work the other way around? flanges are the same and you can flip it around? sorry if i sound stupid, but lmk. i just dont wanna chop up a nice AFI mani so i can fit a 38mm wg i already had on... ty!

I have a couple of those adapters myself. The big problem is trying to find a bolt with a head thin enough to fit, and still get your v-band clamp installed. Very tight, I don't know why they designed it that way. You might have to grind a bolt down to make it work.

Although it creates a bottleneck, having the bigger valve area facing the ex mani, could help those with creep. Bigger actuation surface area to help open the valve sooner.

I noticed this... but I mocked it up with some flywheel style low profile bolts that I had in my box, seemed to work quite nicely.

Creep is not really an issue (although my manifold design does not make life easy for a wastegate), this is just planning ahead for the future and the vband is much easier to work with.

It possibly could, but you'd have to run a but behind the flange for the 38mm. The V-band should work regardless of it mating to a v-band wg or v-band manifold.

I think that those bolts are called flange head bolts. You usually need an M8 bolt, but you'll need to find an M8 bolt with like an M6 head if you don't want to have to do any grinding.

IIRC, the base flange on a 38mm has no threads, so you could also just go with 5/16" button heads (if you can't get the right 8mm buttonheads) and have the bolt head just below the v-band clamp. Looks like a tight squeeze for any bolt between the v-band clamp though.

Yeah, these have a head like the style of an arp flywheel bolt... very slim profile.

I also have some flanged button head allens (the head is just broader than a normal button head) or even some standard low profile allens that worked for mockup as well, if I want to go another route. I am a little bit of perfectionist so I tried a few different options... got to love the misc. bolt box.
