Well yesterday I was helping my buddy pull the head off a B20/VTEC. He thought he had blown a headgasket. After the head was off, we turned the motor over a little bit to check out the cylinder walls while we were in there. There was no scoring etc., but I pushed down on piston #2 and it dropped down a couple mm's and made a clunk, while the other pistons didn't move at all. WTF?!
There was something definitely wrong, so we pulled off the pan and took out the rod/piston. The crazy thing was that there was no rod bearing on either side of the rod. The rod had scarring on the surface where the bearing was supposed to go, and the crank journal was also scarred.
I have no clue how the motor even ran, since my buddy was running it for weeks already. There a small amount of metal shavings on the bottom of the pan, which was probably from the crank.
Has anyone ever heard of anything like this?

I don't think so. My friend said he was driving on the freeway, when the temp suddenly jumped to H, so he had to pull off the road and get it towed home. It's been driving fine for weeks already. This is the 2nd B20 block thats been bad for him. First time his block had rod knock, so he exchanged it and now he gets this.
im assuming that he didnt put the engine together, prolly should have. i have a feeling that the bearing just chewed itself up. did u check and see if there is any remains of a bearing in the rod or is it completely missing and did the rod bolts stretch?

He bought a stock longblock B20 from PasswordJDM. There are no remains of the bearing. It looked as if the rod was installed with no bearing in the first place.
If he bought it from passwordjdm more then likely it a used motor from japan. Theres no way possible it didnt have a bearing that **** would have knocked so loud.

I also highley doubt that the bearing was never installed, it would have knocked like crazy. If the bearing was completley gone, it had to have been knocking for a while, for it to get completley chewed up. What dose the oil pick up screen look like? i would think if the whole bearing was missing, it should be jam packed with metal debris.
Same thing happened with my stock b16. The bearing was near non existant. No knock at all. Stopped at the stop light, motor died down quite and never started again. Took the pan off, and no bearing at all!
i dont see how the motor even ran with the oil light flashing red and the engine knocking from the first start and also the check engine light would be flashing also for no v tech due to no oil pressure sounds like a weird fish story? post some pics for every one to see.
sounds like there was too much clearance between the bearing and the crank and it beat the bearing to death. If there was no bearing ever installed you would have known as soon as you fired it up
