I just bought a 97 lude with 98KI just wondering if driving shift mode all the time will blow up the engine so easily?

first off... using shift mode wont blow up your engine... it will however speed up the tranny failure process. Dont drive it in sportshift mode...every time you shift causes more ware on this weak tranny. These trannys fail very easily. I know because it happend to me and coutless others. Look at investing into a tranny cooler.

Good luck

Yes I am suggesting you dont do that. Trust me on this one... driving in "shift mode" only puts extra stress and will speed up the failure process. Baby your automatic and it will last longer. Unless you have 3k just sitn around for when it goes out. Lol I was driving in shift mode all the time up until the day it failed.

Really? Your lude is failed because of the shift mode~~!! Damn!! I shouldn't try it then...but how long does it take for you to blow up the engine since you start drive the "shift mode" all the time?

Why would you think driving in SS mode is going to "blow up your engine"?

Anyways...I've had my 98 auto Prelude brand new and have been driving in SS mode since day 1. I'm at 98 K miles and the transmissions shifts just as well as it did brand new.

I shift around 3-4K. Hit VTEC atleast, atleast once a day on 2nd gear on my entry to the freeway.

I've installed a Tranny cooler and I'm using 1-to-3 mix of Mobil1ATF/Honda ATF every 15K miles. I did all this after going on the forums and reading about the "problematic" SS transmission at around 80K miles. I never issues with my SS transmission, but I may be the exception to the norm. But really who writes to NOT complain when something's working great?

Take care of the tranny, don't be stupid with it and it will serve you as long as a manual. Cheers.

Shift mode doesnt cause failure it just speeds it up. You can go in shift mode if you want just dont drive around all the time in shift mode. Then engine doesnt blow up ... its the transmission. Some peoples Auto transmissions have failed at 50,000 miles and some have failed at 150,000 miles. I only had my car for about 3 or 4 months before it blew up. I had been driving in shift mode for about 1 1/2 -2 months.. all the time, every time.

You can use sport shift just don't switch from sport shift to fully automatic while driving. Always get your local Honda dealer to do a transmission fluid change every year or every 15k miles. Many of the failures are due to lack of maintenance because the owners never get fluid changes. Think about it, how long do you think an engine would last if you never did an oil change?

Why not? The car most likely will just shift to 4th gear????
